[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed with stable kernel issue on 64 bit only
2 machines running tumbleweeb with the stable kernel repos enabled (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/). I normally do zypper ref and then zypper dup on both machines almost daily. This last cycle, the 32 bit machine worked just fine, and is now running kernel-desktop-4.2.0-5.1.ge7543dd.i686. The 64 bit machine did not pick up this version of the kernel during zypper dup. I see the proper kernel rpm exists for 64 bit machines in the repo. Trying to install the kernel via: zypper in http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/i686/kerne... results in: Problem: This request will break your system! libwx_gtk2u_html-suse-3_0-0-3.0.1-2.1.11.x86_64 requires /sbin/ldconfig, but this requirement cannot be provided uninstallable providers: glibc-2.19-16.15.1.i586[openSUSE_13.2_Update] glibc-2.19-16.9.1.i586[openSUSE_13.2_Update] glibc-2.19-16.15.1.i686[openSUSE_13.2_Update] glibc-2.19-16.9.1.i686[openSUSE_13.2_Update] glibc-2.19-16.15.1.x86_64[openSUSE_13.2_Update] glibc-2.19-16.9.1.x86_64[openSUSE_13.2_Update] Why is the installation of the kernel rpm complaining about some totally different RPM's dependencies (to me it appears that the messages are complaining about libwx_gtk2u_html-suse having issues with the glibc rpm ... nothing to do with the kernel rpm). I am pretty sure this is caused by some type of repo mixup, but I cannot seem to figure out what. Any help would be much appreciated. -- --Moby -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
First question: Why are doing this? The openSUSE Tumbleweed distribution has the latest tested kernel in it. I dont understand the use case for adding Kernel:stable to it Second question: How are your repos setup? You clearly haven't got openSUSE tumbleweed setup correctly - because that depedenency error is referencing a repo named "openSUSE_13.2_Update" Tumbleweed should not have any openSUSE_13.2* Repositories. Hope this helps On 13 September 2015 at 19:30, Moby <moby@mobsternet.com> wrote:

Thanks Richard. I use the kernel from stable kernel repo due to certain btrfs issues. It was Anton on here (I believe) who had suggested that for me to overcome certain problems I was seeing with btrfs. This higher kernel version from the stable kernel repo fixed my btrfs issues. I had left the oss 13.2 repos in the repo list thinking that tumbleweed repo versions of RPMs would be higher and zypper woud therefore not use anything from the oss 13.2 repos. I will remove those and retry. -- --Moby -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

So now that Tw kernel has had updated btrfs, drop kernel:stable and use the kernel meant for Tw and do away with your problems. I had full disk problem with btrfs and do not now. Many improvements in newer kernels are backported to previous kernels. you have a 64bit system Yes, the error message could be more obvious :-)

Thanks Michal. The kernel is 64 bit - why do you think it is 32 bit? There is a 32 bit kernel at the same repo in the i586 directory. My problem appears to be one of rpm dependencies - I am running a query for all RPMs on the system with no repo. Apologies Michal, you are right - that was the 32 bit kernel. I feel like a moron, the 64 bit version of the kernel is not out there. Well, at least I have a fairly clean system now, with a lot of un-needed RPMs removed! Thanks Patrick, I saw my mistake with the i686 and already sent my apologies to the list; should have been the email right after the one you replied to. Yes, I did think of not using the kernel that I thought I was having problems installing (as it turns out, and I now know, that kernel does not exist!). I have a need to try out the kernels from stable on this one machine - in addition to the btrfs issues, I need the newer kernels from stable to get the wifi card and audio to work properly. The machine has been doing much better (consistent audio experience and no drops with the wifi) with the kernels from the stable repo. I understand at some point the fixes will get ported to the versions of the kernel in Tumbleweed, I was seeking assistance on how to get the kernel from stable running on this machine. -- --Moby -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
