[opensuse-factory] update question, 32bit to 64bit Tumbleweed
On one of my systems which I thought to be a 32 bit system I just discovered that in the bios a sentence Intel EM64T capable. Googled and found that I indeed could run x86_64. Due to a problem with a hard disk I momentarily run a 32 bit 13.2 Would like to change to Tumbleweed 64 bit and wonder if I could zypper dup from the running 32 bit 13.2 to Tumbleweed 64 bit in one movement or would it be better to redo that computer with the current iso of Tumbleweed? Some experience available? -- Linux User 183145 using KDE4 and LXDE on a Pentium IV , powered by openSUSE 20150909 (x86_64) Kernel: 4.2.0-6.g31d60fb-desktop KDE Development Platform: 4.14.10 14:46pm up 2:50, 2 users, load average: 0.26, 0.29, 0.32 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Definitely not. from the running 32 bit 13.2 to Tumbleweed 64 bit in one movement
No, not from a running live system. or would it
be better to redo that computer with the current iso of Tumbleweed?
IIRC "seife" documented or described how he did the switch without having to rebuild the system. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

via zypper dup, no, although some people say they have done it. Apparently you have to first update the entire zypper stack, perhaps some system libraries. If it crashes the system will be unbootable. It is better to do it from another system, like booting the installation DVD, and choosing upgrade; although (unless it has been corrected) the 32 bit partition will not be detected automatically, and when forced, it will give a big warning against proceeding. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. If TW is using the same installation version as Leap, then all but the simplest installation types won't work currently. https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=941398 though marked fixed hasn't hit the mirrors yet, so dependency resolution crashes the whole installation process. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I suppose. I haven't tried recently. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Actually, the very first thing to install is kernel. I have done similar switch back in Mandrake. You first install 64 bit kernel and reboot; then 64 bit glibc. Of course, it must be done manually. Now you can start with installing 64 bit versions of other packages. At this point using urpmi worked so I guess zypper may work too.

I have done system update from 11.1 i586 to 11.4 x86_64 using openSUSE DVD. Boot from DVD/CD. Not sure, you can do such online update. -- WBR. Kyrill

no, this won't work.

With a few intermediate steps, this is how it worked for me in 2011: http://seifesrants.blogspot.de/2011/02/opensuse-32bit-to-64bit-live-conversi... I'd still backup all important stuff before and would be prepared to rebuild the machine from scratch in case something goes wrong :-) Good luck! -- Stefan Seyfried "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." -- Richard Feynman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
