[opensuse-factory] YaST2
I want to thank the SUSE folks for all their hard work in producing again another release. I am very well aware that this is an exhausting and enormous effort. I especially appreciate the added efforts that go into improving many of the packages that others contribute and therefor improving Linux for tthe community at large. One such example is the audio and other improvements with Impress from OpenOffice. Ubuntu falls far behind in this area. One question is, when I want to see all possible updates available. I notice that I can go to YaST -> Software management. Then click on Package -> All Packages (or "all in this list") seems to do that. But, I don't think I ever get the chance to review what is going to be updated. (I may be wrong by not proceeding far enough.) It seems a bit scary to do this so I aborted. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

What about trying YaST->Online update? 'Needed patches' filter (default) shows all patches (updates) currently relevant for your system. Or, if you prefer CLI, 'zypper lu' ('zypper list-updates') is your friend. Showing _what_ will be installed is not the same as _why_ it will be installed which is what a change list would show. This I believe is more inline with what the OP was looking for. The 'why' is simple enough: the user requested upgrade to newer version if available on any of the configured repositories with their configured priorities. If you want detailed, internal, info, generate a solvertestcase file. However, you can go to the install filter, and if you look carefully you can see the installed version and the new version it is going to be installed. You can also select the version tab and choose a different version. If that is not what you meant, perhaps you can type a sample entry for that table you say, and see what the devs here think of it :-? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. No. The user saw upgrades _were_ available (when checking) and wanted to know why the upgrades were available. I also at times see that and would like to see what generated the need for an upgrade I.E. change list. Eummmm... no, I think you or I or both are confused. I think the OP user told YaST to upgrade all available. ] One question is, when I want to see all possible updates available. ] I notice that I can go to YaST -> Software management. ] Then click on Package -> All Packages (or "all in this list") seems to do ] that. It is not an automatic upgrade, it is a manually triggered upgrade of packages to a newer version if one is available on the selected repos (this I know), and it has a higher priority that the one currently installed (this I guess). When you start YOU and it says "Hey, you have updates!" then it is because there are mandatory patches or updates in the repository that is known to be the update repo (only one has that property, afaik). However, I don't know if it would be doable to click on one of the packages to be updated and see a help hint message and say why that particular package is going to be updated to that particular version. Perhaps show a list of available options and say why each one was discarded and another one chosen. Too many variables: dependencies, user choices... I think all that info is in the solvercase file, though. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. To see everything newer available, also packages not just patches, use cli: zypper lu -t package This lists updates (lu) and -t package option makes it list all Keep your konsole/terminal pretty wide, the lines are quite long :) -- Vahis http://waxborg.servepics.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

There is a filter: Installation Summary that shows packages to be installed -- David C. I am beginning to think that I wasn't clear or have been misunderstood with my question. If I got to software Management and look through the entire list of offerings. Some items show an update as seen within the parens (.....) to the right where I always have to expand the field to see the update number. What I would like is a button that shows me all of the potential updates so that I can choose which ones are of interest. Ubuntu automates this and makes it very easy. I only run SUSE for production. I have an Ubuntu machine I turn on to support others. yast2-gtk has what you want, install yast2-gtk and then start it from cli sudo yast2 --gtk sw_single or from kde run command yast2 --gtk sw_single as root. If you find you prefer it edit your kde menu. Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

So, if I understand it correctly, you'd like to see a package filter (much like those we already have - Patterns, Languages, Repositories etc.), something like 'Updatable packages' i.e. all those that have newer version available in some of the configured repositories, in package manager GUI .. Gtk UI has it already, I think it's a nice feature request to have that in Qt UI (maybe also curses, if somebody would make use of it even there) frozenB. -- \\\\\ Katarina Machalkova \\\\\\\__o YaST developer __\\\\\\\'/_ & hedgehog painter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

It's there, and we really don't want even more filter views - there are too many already for many not-so-expert users. Simply use a view where you can see all packages you are possibly interested in, e.g. "Installation Summary" with "installed" checked, then sort for versions: You will get the "red" packages first (packages where you have a newer version than available on any active repository), then "blue" packages (packages that could be updated), then "black" (not installed or you have the most recent version). Nice to know, but I only have 11.0 installed and I don't see a way to do that sort. Is it a new 11.1 feature? ==> What I tried in 11.0. launch yast, select repositories as my filter - packman repository as my specific repostory. click on installed to sort by "installed". (I don't see a sort by version choice.) I get a mix of red, blue, and black. No apparent sorting by status. Sorry, bad luck: It's available in all releases _except_ 11.0. It was there in the older Qt3-based versions, and it's back in 11.1, but with all the changes due to the Qt4 migration in 11.0, this particular feature didn't make it.
