[opensuse-factory] leap 42.3 amdgpu-pro capability
Hi, I know, leap 42.3 is not out yet but I suspect there are some who have already tried installing the amdgpu-pro driver. Any success so far with the amdgpu-pro install script or even with only the --compute parameter? cu Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Hi,

Any success so far with the amdgpu-pro install script or even with only the --compute parameter?
You must to patch the driver: https://community.amd.com/thread/212558 You can find here the latest patch for the driver 17.10: https://community.amd.com/servlet/JiveServlet/download/2795893-72963/patch_1... But the old Catalyst 14 in opensuse Leap 42.1, has better perfomance than the latest 17.10 amdgpu-pro. Try first installing Mesa, and mantain the open souce amdgpu driver: https://software.opensuse.org/download.html?project=X11:XOrg&package=Mesa Regards, Juan -- USA LINUX OPENSUSE QUE ES SOFTWARE LIBRE, NO NECESITAS PIRATEAR NADA Y NI TE VAS A PREOCUPAR MAS POR LOS VIRUS Y SPYWARES: http://www.opensuse.org/es/ Puedes visitar mi blog en: http://jerbes.blogspot.com.ar/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Just as a note: You will need an up-to-date kernel to get that sort of
performance. The kernel in Leap 42.2 is reasonably antiquated when it comes
to the amdgpu kernel module. I don't know about Leap 42.3's kernel, though.
Best regards,
Carmen

Yes. It should be installing the amdgpu-pro into Leap' 4.4x kernel. If it works the next step should be the latest kernel-stable + mesa. cu Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I want the latest darktable with openCL, that is enough "latest". I have been using Tumbleweed for half a year. Beautiful, but too many other updates for my taste. Anyhow, I noticed that with Tumbleweed kernels the graphics card works better. So the idea is: Get Leap 42.3 + amdgpu-pro + newer kernels + mesa + new darktable. cu Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

you are not *required* to do frequent updates, and you can specify which you do apply. I also heavily use darktable with nvidia but for me opencl is slower than not with my GTS450.
Anyhow, I noticed that with Tumbleweed kernels the graphics card works better. So the idea is: Get Leap 42.3 + amdgpu-pro + newer kernels + mesa + new darktable.
you probably "jump thru as many hoops" trying that path and stand a greater chance of trouble, but .... -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I know, but I can't resist with TW.

I don't know about 42.3 but I get "newer kernels" than Tumbleweed fron the Kernel_Stable repository. I'm running # uname -a Linux main.HOME.SystemI.ca 4.12.1-1.gb24ee10-default #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jul 12 15:08:48 UTC 2017 (b24ee10) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Yes, an amdgpu-pro would be nice. So would a matched pair of 27" 2560-by-1440 resolution cinema displays. -- Never criticise somebody until you have walked a mile in their shoes. not amd but my GTS450 is currently driving a 27" 1920x1080 Samsung and a 4k 55" Samsung (tv) 1920x1080 with very good results, reporting 3840x1080 combined. http://wahoo.no-ip.org/~paka/20170525_091440.jpg old photo -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Too much patch work. I think it should at least work in Leap without any user patches which might bring down the machine I depend on with the next update.
You can find here the latest patch for the driver 17.10:

I've read the phoronics article, but I need openCL. Thanks Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
