[opensuse-factory] Which update to perform
Hi All- Trying to figure out the best method for upgrading my current 11.0 system. One method is to use 'zypper up -t package' and the other is to use 'zypper dup'. I have attached the output of both to this e-mail. The latter gives me a number of package conflicts that I can resolve by choosing to not install Azureus, kde4-konqueror-plugins, compiz-kde4, and a few others. What is the relative merit of each method? -- Cheers, Trey ---- I've touch'd the highest point of all my greatness; And from that full meridian of my glory I haste now to my setting. I shall fall, Like a bright exhalation in the evening And no man see me more. -- Shakespeare Linux basilisk 2.6.25.5-1.1-default i686 GNU/Linux 5:04pm up 2:26, 6 users, load average: 0.16, 0.09, 0.06

Hi, I did it the following way: Going to Yast, install software, chose filter repositories, System, in Menu Package, upgrade all if new package is available. This did it for me --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

That looks like that provides the same behavior as 'zypper dup'. So my question is, what is the difference between how 'zypper up -t package' and 'zypper dup' are going to 'upgrade' my machine given the repositories I have: basilisk:/home/trey # zypper lr # | Alias | Name | Enabled | Refresh ---+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+-----------------------------------------------------+---------+-------- 1 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Virtualization:/Qemu/openSUSE_Fact... | openSUSE BuildService - Virtualization (QEMU) | Yes | Yes 2 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Emulators:/Wine/openSUSE_11.0/ | openSUSE BuildService - Wine CVS Builds | Yes | Yes 3 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSU... | openSUSE BuildService - KDE4:Factory:Desktop | Yes | Yes 4 | openSUSE:Factory | openSUSE:Factory | Yes | Yes 5 | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-Factory-non-oss/inst-source-ext... | Main Repository (NON-OSS) | Yes | Yes 6 | KDE:KDE4:STABLE:Extra-Apps | KDE:KDE4:STABLE:Extra-Apps | Yes | Yes 7 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/database/openSUSE_11.0/ | openSUSE BuildService - Database | Yes | Yes 8 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Community/openSUSE_Factory/ | openSUSE BuildService - KDE:Community | Yes | Yes 9 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/php/openSUSE_11.0/ | openSUSE BuildService - PHP | Yes | Yes 10 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/openSUSE_11.0/ | openSUSE BuildService - X11:XGL | Yes | Yes 11 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/Community/openSUSE_11.0/ | openSUSE BuildService - GNOME:Community | Yes | Yes 12 | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/ | Main Repository (OSS) | Yes | Yes 13 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/xfce/openSUSE_Factory/ | openSUSE BuildService - XFCE | Yes | Yes 14 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/games/openSUSE_Factory/ | openSUSE BuildService - Games | Yes | Yes 15 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_11.0/ | openSUSE BuildService - Mozilla | Yes | Yes 16 | home:jhaygood | home:jhaygood | Yes | Yes 17 | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/ | Main Repository (OSS) | Yes | Yes 18 | http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.0 | NVIDIA Repository | Yes | Yes 19 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Backports/openSUSE_11.0/ | openSUSE BuildService - KDE:Backports | Yes | Yes 20 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/Community/openSUSE_Factory/ | openSUSE BuildService - GNOME:Community | Yes | Yes 21 | home:netmax | home:netmax | Yes | Yes 22 | KDE:KDE4:STABLE:Desktop | KDE:KDE4:STABLE:Desktop | Yes | Yes 23 | http://www.opensuse-education.org/download/repo/1.0/11.0 | openSUSE Education | Yes | Yes 24 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/OpenOffice.org:/STABLE/openSUSE_11... | openSUSE BuildService - OpenOffice.org | Yes | Yes 25 | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss/ | Main Repository (NON-OSS) | Yes | Yes 26 | openSUSE-DVD 11.0 | openSUSE-DVD 11.0 | No | No 27 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Community/openSUSE_11.0/ | openSUSE BuildService - KDE:Community | Yes | Yes 28 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/database/openSUSE_Factory/ | openSUSE BuildService - Database | Yes | Yes 29 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/STABLE/openSUSE_11.0/ | openSUSE BuildService - GNOME:STABLE | Yes | Yes 30 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/database/openSUSE_Factory/... | openSUSE BuildService - Database | Yes | Yes 31 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/mail/openSUSE_Factory/ | openSUSE BuildService - Mail Server | Yes | Yes 32 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Virtualization:/VirtualBox/openSUS... | openSUSE BuildService - Virtualization (VirtualBox) | Yes | Yes 33 | http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/11.0/ | Packman Repository | Yes | Yes 34 | http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.0/ | Main Update Repository | Yes | Yes 35 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/SUSE_Factory/ | openSUSE BuildService - X11:XGL | Yes | Yes 36 | http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/11.0/ | VideoLan Repository | Yes | Yes -- Cheers, Trey ---- You may be sure that when a man begins to call himself a "realist," he is preparing to do something he is secretly ashamed of doing. -- Sydney Harris Linux basilisk 2.6.25.5-1.1-default i686 GNU/Linux 6:31pm up 3:53, 6 users, load average: 0.37, 0.35, 0.27 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

No, it is along 'zypper up -t package'. In principle: zypper up -t package should be OK if you have already installed RC, as the package set and dependencies are almost unchanged. 'zypper dup' also handles e.g. package renames etc, including evaluating hardware dependencies. This is much more dangerous as it might trigger large changes if any of your numerous repositories goes ahead of Factory. OTOH, is you are upgrading from e.g. Beta1, I would go for zypper dup. So, the answer is 'it depends' ;-) Stano
So my question is, what is the difference between how 'zypper up -t package' and 'zypper dup' are going to 'upgrade' my machine given the repositories I have:
