[opensuse-factory] observations with 13.1RC1 (locate, mga)
Hi, I have updated a real HW (32bit) from 12.3 to 13.1 RC1 with zypper dup. The upgrade was smooth. Some observations though: findutils-locate was replaced by mlocate. users who want to use locate have to be added to the group "locate". Probably this should be mentioned in the release notes. The new database /var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db is only created when cron.daily is run. The old database /var/lib/locatedb is not deleted during the upgrade. BTW: the installed release notes still contain a lot of "CHECKIT:12.3". This machine has a matrox video card which worked fine with the mga driver in the previous openSUSE releases even when the performance got worse and worse because of degrading support for this HW. With 13.1RC1 it seems there is no signal (or not acceptable for the display) although the xserver starts and runs. I had to switch to the fbdev driver to get graphics back. On this system I can not reproduce https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=834898 while I still see this with 13.1 RC1 64bit in a virtual machine. I have a G400 in one of my 13.1RC1+ systems. Works just fine @1792x1344 for such an old gfxchip with a 1.133GHz Piii CPU, but I configure xorg.conf to get it the way I like it. I have no recollection what may have happened trying to use automagic. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Mine is a G450 with DVI connector, used in single head mode. The autoconfiguration of X also selects the mga driver, like my xorg.conf from 12.3, the server starts and keeps running, no serious errors logged in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, but no picture. When I just replace the mga driver in xorg.conf by the fbdev I get a working display. I have the same with 12.2 and a matrox g550 dual head. X is running, icewm-session has started its processes, but screen is dark with "out of range" - with and without xorg.conf. The monitor gets properly detected over DVI. Dark even with reduced hor and vert sync values. That's why there is a component "Release Notes" in bugzilla. Such a bugreport would look like https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=847801 ;-)

Feel free to open bugreports about it ;-)

;-)) [Ratti zu > $me beim Testen seiner Fontlinge]

Why do you think so? findutils [1] is still shipped with locate(1) and the update(1) job for cron. Why do you think so? Simple answer: before the upgrade in openSUSE 12.3 I had findutils-4.5.10-10.8.1.i586 findutils-locate-4.5.10-10.8.1.i586
I did the upgrade using zypper dup without modifying the list of packages which should be installed or upgraded. After the upgrade in 13.1 I have findutils-4.5.12-1.1.i586 mlocate-0.26-4.1.2.i586 Again - I did not choose to get mlocate, it happened automatically.
findutils [1] is still shipped with locate(1) and the update(1) job for cron. well, my observation was that the upgrade replaced findutils-locate by mlocate and it had the described effects. The rpm findutils did not and does not contain locate and updatedb, it was split off some versions ago into the findutils-locate rpm package.
Whether the replacement of findutils-locate by mlocate was an error of the upgrade procedure or a decision of the community I can't tell or if one package has an advantage over the other. Mlocate is my toy :) It is supposed to replace the findutils-locate due to being superior in all aspects, but I kept the old one around for now as I was not sure it is flawless in openSUSE so people can fallback. Anyway replied in the bug. Tom

*censored* I had it prepared for a long time but then forgot about it. Created new pull request [1] so it is on rc2. Cheers Tom [1] https://github.com/openSUSE/patterns/pull/57

There are only two sane ways to operate mlocate: a) run setgid and index as root or b) run unprivileged and index as nobody as findutils-locate does it. The latter obviously is the more defensive way. Tomas, we've discussed this unprivileged cron job in the past. Why is it still not implemented? In the current state mlocate is not a candidate for a default installed package IMO so it shouldn't be in any pattern and also not obsolete findutils-locate to avoid breaking updates. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.de/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
