I'm grateful that there still is i586 support in TW and I don't claim that promoting i586 would be without problems. However, with limited resources available, dropping -v1 and investing a bit more into i586 might be a better choice than having both, -v1 and i586, in bad shape.
A -v0 x86_64 kernel with a i586 userland might do, but I understand
using a 32bit kernel is really bad for a x86_64 capable CPU.
Note that in case we want to advance to a mixed -vN system with
packages selected according to CPU requirements we'd still need a
pure -v0 installer / image to bootstrap this. Keeping such a
thing officially maintained looks quite sensible to me.
