It only saves some time to add the update-repo _before_ doing the installation.
I find that updating during the installation wastes my time :-) I prefer to finish the installation from the dvd, get the system running, and start using it right away. While I configure things in the system I run the updates - instead of just looking at the screen for a long time during the installation.
