Ok, I'm still a bit confused. Sorry for the newbish questions but this is my first time trying to contribute to testing on Factory so I'm still getting my bearings.
No problem... everybody starts contributing at one point... for you, the time has come now too.
I'm unsure what the implications of the RCs are to the factory? Now
that
I'm pointing at the factory repos, is issuing a "zypper dup" or "zypper up" sufficient to keep me on the latest packages?
Well, the BETAs and RCs are snapshots of a defined status, which once passes through Factory. At this late stage (RC due very soon), Factory is not getting so many upgrades.
More importantly; is this the best way to contribute to testing in the community? I'm a big believer in SUSE so I want to test and help crush as many bugs as possible so please let me know if this is not the best way.
Getting bugreports is 2nd best option to contribute.. best is patches :) You have to be aware that at this very late stage, the devs won't be able to kill every single bug that might come up. They are not prioritized. So a small one might still stay in the system at the end (can't be avoided... otherwise we'll get openSUSE 11.1 with the current package selection in 10 years). So starting early off with reporting is a good thing and raises chances of a good fix. Also getting in touch with some upstream projects can help a bug get fixed; if upstream has a patch for it, it's very likely to get it it's very likely to have it included also now.
