To be picky ;-) you can really change that yourself: - chgrp (to one of the groups you are a member of) - chmod - setfacl Speaking of setfacl - ACLs also need the group permissions not to be "---" (otherwise the ACLs will become "effective ---"). There's another (probably rarely used) thing that won't work with 700 permissions: ~/public_html aka http://localhost/~$USER For this, Apache will need permissions to access ~/public_html and at least needs x permissions for the home directory.
