A process called "grub" was taking 99% CPU, if I am not mistaken this happened while grub was being installed so it was probably some pre- or post-install script of the rpm. Did you have a separate /boot partition formatted with ext2/3 filesystem? If so, then what you described should work (and file a bug in this case, please).
