The day some essential software (such as Firefox) is only available as flatpak on Tumbleweed (whether audited or not), will be the day I seriously consider switching distro. I sort of understand why the trend is to run software into boxes into boxes, but I really dislike it.
That's my feeling as well, and if there's no RPM-based distro left without that weird packaging like flatpak, it's probably time to go back to Windows and at least doing away with all the complication that using Linux means in practice anyhow.

I think you greatly underestimate the amount of complexity that is in
modern Windows compared to Linux even with containers and
flatpaks in place.
Also, Windows and MacOS are both already applying concepts that we want
to try with ALP, like immutable system partitions, sandboxed
applications, A/B system upgrades, etc. They just rolled them out and no
one noticed, because they made sure that the UX stayed the same.
So I think that the key take away is to ensure that the user experience
is not degraded.
