I think all this effort would be better spent finalizing the missing functionality of KDE4 apps.
Like kaffeine, I miss kaffeine3, which was complete, a decent media player. Kaffeine4 doesn't even have a way to switch subtitles, which is ridiculous.
All this effort in KDE3 would be better spent in trying to fill those huge gaps in KDE4 functionality, IMO.
Remember, this is a community and a community project, not a company. Thus, one should be careful about telling people wher they should spend their time and effort. Ilya has decided to maintain KDE3, which I am certain has benefits for some users of openSUSE. Thanks for the effort Ilya. The question we should be discussing here is not how people spent the time they volunteer to the project, rather we should discuss whether KDE3 should be part of the main release and what to say about it in the release notes. IMHO KDE3 should not be part of the main release, for reasons I mentioned earlier in this thread, but should be promoted in the release notes in a "Community" section thereof.
