...is this because just the i586 builds fail (x86_64 builds just fine)? I would suggest to simply disable i586 builds at the repository level, but otherwise I am committed to maintaining this (as I have for a while now).

I treat a package as 'failing' for Factory when openSUSE:Factory/$PKG shows any 'failed' entry. openSUSE:Factory accepts packages and changes for packages via submissions - but there are no meta changes to the package (build enable/disable) - if the package claims to not work in i586, it has to specify so in the .spec file by means of ExcludeArch/ExclusiveArch.
