Is the alpine relpacement seemingless?
Very much so, yes. Alpine offers some additional settings and functionality and has some change under the hood wrt. UTF-8 support which are mostly improvements but may be noticable in corner cases, but it is really just evolutionary. I have been following Alpine for more than a year, from the very early snapshots, and regularily used both Pine and Alpine on the same machine with the same config file even and that works just fine.
