open an xterm, call "nmtui". Works also in virtual console. no GTK needed.

Want to, of course not. :-) Phone help is a fact of life. Some are luckier than others avoiding it. It's easier to tell someone where to click than instructing what to type in combination with locating the right keys to type.
I would just install nm-applet and be done. Who cares if it is GTK if it works well.
