How much of this was inherited from Unix? Years ago, every console would require it's own serial port. There would also be ports used for remote communications. BTW, I used to be a computer tech for a telecommunications company. Every system I worked on had many serial ports. One example I worked on would be the old Air Canada reservation system, where there were terminals at airports and travel agents around the world. On that network, there were a couple of dozen PDP-11s, each with up to 4 boards, with 8 serial ports on each board.
