The OP does not seem to understand that with beginning to write star in 1982, "tar" is not the name of a single program but that there are more such implementations.

Not more than we can trust openSUSE :)
I do not distrust suse in general, but I would never use e.g. gtar (which appears under the name "tar" on suse) as long as I compile star within a minute.
