Re: [suse-linux-uk-schools] K12LTSP
would be anybody be interested in a training
day on K12LTSP? (or LTSP more generally), as Sandwell's EMU have offered to host. No exact date, but soon, also no real cost. its not for politics, more of a 'run wot u brung' event for schools/LEAs
I was certainly very interested in this. I have certain questions about it regarding the server spec recomendations, they seem way above what would be required even for windows 2000 terminal server. That aside, me for one am dead keen on delving into this one a bit more.I`d certainly get up and running quicker if someone a bit techier (I`m sure that is a word) than I showed me some of their findings/tips first. LTSP is almost certain to require more resources than Windows Terminal Server. With LTSP you ARE running LINUX on the local machine - albeit without a hard disc. With Terminal Server the applications (and desktop) are 'running' on the server - and only the display is hosted by the client. 386 CPU and DOS is minimum spec for WTS provided you use the CITRIX layer on top. Otherwise you need a proper 32bit CPU. It would be possible to get away with fewer resources by 'only' running an Xserver on the client - but X is a much bigger beast than a WTS client. We use Xserver clients on 12MB Acorn RiscPC and A7000 clients quite successfully. We also use Citrix on the same machines. -- Alan Davies Head of Computing Birkenhead School On Sun 25 Mar, M Read wrote:

I know people who run LTSP clients on 486sx25's with 8MB RAM - I think running 800x600x16. They have heat sinks instead of fans, and the fans of the PSU's have been cut. This gives them almost completely silent (they're looking for quieter keyboards) workstations. Their next upgrade will be a quieter wall clock. And boy do I envy them!!!!
