I would still avoid using 255.255.254.0 as a netmask for a class C network. The default network mask is 255.255.255.0 then you can subnet from there borrowing bits from the fourth octet. Supernetting does not work well. The alternative is to use the 172.31.0.0 network with netmask 255.255.0.0 instead of the Class C one you are using.
