Still can't get this to go.
SMTP works fine and mail goes into and out of linux box via the router.
Local mail works on linux box.
Can "mail" read it, can "mutt", ,"pine", etc?
A PC connecting to the linux box can send mail OK via SMTP to Linux box (which uses postfix)
Where is postfix putting the mail, /var/spool/mail/<username>, ~<user>/Mailbox or ~<user>/Maildir
BUT I can't get POP3 nor IMAP connections to read any mail.
Either it refuses the login from the mail client or complains about the authorisation.
Try "telnet localhost 110" which should connect you to the POP3 server. Then do "USER <username>" and "PASS <password>", that should give you some idea about what is going on. If this works try "telnet <server> 110" from a different machine.
I can see imap, and pop3 in netstat as listening devices.
Clearly I am missing something. Do I need to fiddle with Hosts.allow/deny
If telnetting to port 110 works on the machine itself, but not from other machines then you need to alter hosts.allow. The results of any action taken by tcpd should show up in a log file which will tell you if a connection is being accepted or rejected.
Telnet works OK - as does xdm sessions to PC clients.
Do I need to fiddle with Cyrus or PROCmail?
Procmail shouldn't make any difference. Possibly the pop and imap daemons aren't looking in the right place for the mail. e.g. if the mail is in ~<user>/Mailbox and they are looking in /var/spool/mail/<username> things will come unstuck. -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763
