Hi all Since there has been some response to my mailings I thought I would mail again to let you know what I have done so far. Really just research and planning I started with the linux diskless HOWTO, which are part of the distribution but are also online in several places. These were particularly technical and I have to admit a little confusing for someone who is really very new to Linux. However there were some useful links to other sites. The main two free distributions of the bits and bobs you need to set up this sort of thing appear to be Netboot Etherboot both of which have links from the HOWTO file. In both cases though I found the amount of help wasn't exactly hand holding, more experience was definately needed. However then Roger posted the URL of the Linux Terminal Server Project. Now this seems a much better place to look as they seem interested in helping the virtual beginner to get this running. The site has good detail instructions on setting up a Red Hat Linux machine to be your server and has all the necessary files available for download. I am now planning in the Easter hols to start off with one good machine and a 486 and follow the instructions step by step and see if i can set up a red hat server with the 486 talking to it. Thats just step one. Incidentally don't be put off as I was with all the talk of EPROMS that you have to have burnt to fit onto your Network card to remotely boot. To start with you can be booting from floppy only once you get up and running do you need to find someone who can burn EPROMS (luckily we know someone) Anyway thats my progress report.
