Hi guys, in our OpenStack packaging, we have several files marked as %config(noreplace) but we should discuss when this makes sense and when not. The general pattern in the past seemed to just mark everything as noreplace to (somewhat blindly) please the corresponding rpmlint warning. Recently this changed. In other words, we try to only mark stuff as noreplace where we really expect user's to change files. Good examples are: /etc/nova/nova.conf /etc/logrotate.d/openstack-nova But not necessarilly: /etc/quantum/plugins/bigswitch/restproxy.ini /etc/nova/policy.json /etc/nova/rootwrap.conf /etc/nova/rootwrap.d/api-metadata.filters Primarily rootwrap config is a security thing on which we want to have tight control. Thus these should only be marked as %config so that the user is able to shot himself in the foot. But in the end we still have the bigger duct-tape to fix things up. openstack-nova-novncproxy is not working at the moment. In our ISV project we packaged the novncproxy in the package novnc and removed openstack-nova-novncproxy in openstack-nova. nova-novncproxy is already included in novnc. I want to add the novnc package to C:O:M and remove the nova-novncproxy from openstack-nova. Never look or modify the -doc package itself, simply only care about the $component-doc.spec in the $component dir. To make it more obvious, I recommend something like "osc up -u *-doc" in your checkout directory. (yes it would be nice if the build service would do that automatically, but it is not so clever). The package container in OBS named $component-doc only exists to make the -doc.spec file in $component package actually being built. [opensuse-cloud] Usage of not-yet-reviewed patches in C:O:M?

I just stumbled because of the patch "0001-Use-exec_dirs-for-rootwrap-commands.patch" in the package openstack-quantum (added by Dirk). The patch didn't work, because it was an deprecated version of the patch, and quantum-rootwrap refused to work. Result: all Quantum services refused to work. At the moment I don't like it that there are patches in C:O:M, changing something in the sources of an OpenStack service, without an open review quest in the upstream. And even if there is an open review request: I think that it's not necessary to manually add patches to C:O:M changing something essential. We should simply upstream all our changes and after a successful review we automatically have it in the master tarball. Normally the review process in the upstream is very fast. Sure, if we have to change something very SUSE specific we can use a patch. But we should discuss the usage of patches inside C:O:M before adding them to the packages. And we should never change essential functionality of components. Why we changed from the master tarballs to the milestone tarballs in C:O:M? I thought C:O:M is always the master tarball? We should use the milestone tarballs in C:O:G, but not in C:O:M! Also I would like to have a discussion first on this mailinglist before changing the sources in the SPECs. And looks like we now use the milestone tarball in openstack-quantum, but in the component packages the master tarballs? So thought of trying it on a different distro. OpenSuse 12.3 is out and I thought it would be a good idea to install OpenStack on it. Is there any documentation that I can follow to install it ? Hi all, I am happy to announce that we activated our "cleanvm" job in our openSUSE Jenkins instance: http://ci.opensuse.org/view/Cloud/job/cloud-cleanvm/ About the cleanvm test ----------------------- The "cleanvm" test launches a fresh (clean) VM with a JeOS image and installs the latest openstack packages. In this one-node-cloud a virtual machine is launched using lxc. The tool to create the one-node-cloud is qa_openstack.sh from our automation repository on github: https://github.com/SUSE-Cloud/automation/tree/master/scripts/jenkins Currently we run "cleanvm" for the Folsom package. Hello fellow stackers, although the official Grizzly release is still some weeks ahead, we should branch Cloud:OpenStack:Master into Cloud:OpenStack:Grizzly in order to reduce the amount of breakage we have the fix every week. Branching (speak copypac'ing) effectively freezes all dependencies contrary to our rolling-release master branch. This alone reduces fallout. Currently, OpenStack compoment version upgrades are commited directly into C:OS:Master for fast turnaround and development times. Contrarily, Cloud:OpenStack:Grizzly is a staging branch and automated updates happen first in Cloud:OpenStack:Grizzly:Staging and are only forwarded to C:OS:Grizzly when unit tests pass. This should help or work on Chef cookbooks, since they can start using C:OS:G as a more stable basis. In order to keep C:OS:Master in sync, I would add a cronjob that periodically copypac's changed in C:OS:G back until the Grizzly release really happened. With the change https://review.openstack.org/#/c/19624/ the type of disk images is again tap:raw (instead of file:raw), because file:raw was not working for qcow2 images. At the moment SLES11 SP2 provides libvirt 0.9.6, resulting in the following error at the moment: 09:46:34.392: 3981: error : xend_post:416 : POST operation failed: xend_post: error from xen daemon: (xend.err 'Error creating domain: Invalid Configuration: tap:raw not a valid disk type') Yufang Zhang wrote, that newer libvirt version work without problems using tap:raw instead of file:raw. I tested with libvirt 1.0.3 (from virtualization) and had no problems using tap:raw instead of file:raw. Result: libvirt 0.9.6 is not working with C:O:M when using Xen. I suggest adding libvirt 1.0.3 from virtualization to the C:O:M repository to be able to use Xen on SLES11 SP2. At the moment there is one doc package for each component package. Isn't it better to move the doc packages inside the component packages? At least we should clean up the doc packages. At the moment there are a lot of unnecessary files inside (for example logrotate, init and the spec of the component). pkg_resources.DistributionNotFound: sqlalchemy==0.7.9 pkg_resources.DistributionNotFound: python-quantumclient>=2.2.0,<3.0.0 python-SQLAlchemy-0.7.10-47.1 is installed on the system. Maybe a patch of the tools/pip-requires is sufficient, changing == to >=? Not sure about that. Maybe it's better to offer a separate in the correct version (0.7.9) as required by the upstream. Also python-quantumclient is only available in a wrong version. Latest version on PyPi is python-quantumclient 2.2.0. I think the version in the SPEC should be fixed. At the moment it's 2.1.2.9+git.1363006690.f96219d. But I'm not sure about the usage of the source services. I have something in mind that they will change the Version parameter in the SPEC. Hi, In case no-one saw the announcement[0], the openSUSE on ARM team is holding a hackathon on 08-12 April at the SUSE offices in Nuremberg. One of the focus items is to get an OpenStack image built and released on ARM. The reason is two fold, 1) because we should 2) and more importantly, after speaking with the Xen maintainer for ARM at a recent conference in Hong Kong, he is presenting at OSCON this year and wants to demo OpenStack using Xen on ARM powered by openSUSE. Hello Dirk. If there is already an existing package for libguestfs please add it to C:O:M now. libguestfs is more flexible then using qemu-nbd and I prefer it. At the moment libguestfs is not available in C:O:M. Because I don't like the qemu-nbd stuff I suggest adding libguestfs to C:O:M to be able to use it with nova-compute. We have a workable build in isv:B1-Systems:OpenStack:release:Folsom. It's a customized build for OpenStack using one of the latest development sources of the 1.9 series, it should be workable with latest OpenSUSE and SLES releases/service packs. Customization: Using QEMU instead of KVM, only build the Python bindings, don't build Hivex, FUSE, Zerofree. I successfully used our build of version 1.19.64 with latest Folsom. At the moment I'm preparing a new build using the latest version of libguestfs (1.21.19). I'll submit the package to C:O:M after a successful test with Grizzly. Looks like there are several missing %config parameters in the SPECs. At least in the openstack-quantum package... We should check every package for missing %config parameters to not overwrite existing configurations. I already added the missing %config parameters in openstack-quantum.spec for openstack-quantum. The build of the RabbitMQ server failed for SLES11 SP2 in network:messaging:amqp (and so in C:O:M) for all distributions :( Also I suggest updating to the latest stable release 3.0.4. 2.8.7 is really old. Problem: nothing provides python-httplib2 needed by python-glance-2012.2.4+git.1362583521.1fb759d-1.1.x86_64 Solution 1: do not install openstack-glance-2012.2.4+git.1362583521.1fb759d-1.1.x86_64 Solution 2: break python-glance-2012.2.4+git.1362583521.1fb759d-1.1.x86_64 by ignoring some of its dependencies python-httplib2 should be added to Cloud:OpenStack:Folsom (and the Grizzly project as well). [opensuse-cloud] Coordinating efforts to create OpenStack packages for openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server

Engineers from B1 Systems and SUSE have now joined forces to package OpenStack in the Open Build Service for openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise. The B1 Systems engineers bring in their OpenStack consulting and packaging expertise, the SUSE team their packaging and hardening expertise from building a commercial OpenStack based release with SUSE Cloud. The work is done in the Open Build Service which allows building of packages for various distributions and versions of it. There are stable packages available from the latest OpenStack release, Folsom, and beta packages of the upcoming Grizzly release. These OpenStack packages are build now for openSUSE 12.2, openSUSE 12.3 and SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP2. The joint development project is contained in the Cloud:OpenStack (https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=Cloud%3AOpenStack) and its subprojects. Additionally, OpenStack Folsom is part of the upcoming openSUSE 12.3 release. Thus, you can build, administrate and use an OpenStack cloud within openSUSE. Hi folks At the moment to allocated the node (controller), the discovery works fine, the second PXE boot goes but during the installation appears a error message that said "Error: Failed to add add-on product" , but I've been following the guide 'SUSE Cloud Deployment Guide' to configure repositories and all but this step does not go, also I tried two options: 1. Change the repository location in /opt/dell/chef/cookbooks/provisioner/templates/default/autoyast.xml.erb of the add-on-products like this: <listentry> <media_url><![CDATA[dvd:///?devices=/dev/sr0]]></media_url> <product>suse-cloud</product> <product_dir>/</product_dir> </listentry> That means through DVD inserted in my node controller, but at the end of the test it failed again. 2. I check another solutions (suggestion) referenced by (http://marc.info/?l=opensuse-autoinstall&m=119549949830612&w=2) to avoid the error. (Verify that <signature-handling> tag is not include between the tags <add-on></add-on>). In all cases I launched the comand 'knife cookbook upload -o /opt/dell/chef/cookbooks/ provisioner' to recreate my file autoyast.mxl located in /srv/tftpboot/suse-11.2/autoyast.xml, however, any of these solutions works for me, so I appreciate any help to solve this and complete my autoinstallation to deploy my Cloud. Hi, I have submitted issue 1683 (http://dev.opennebula.org/issues/1683) and submitted a patch. The changes create a new init command line option that supports the functionality of only bootstrapping the DB if necessary by using the -i command line switch. The code changes also include changes in the MySQL code path. However, I do not have a setup where I can test this, basically I know nothing about mysql ;) and it would be great if there is someone interested in testing this. Hello, Issues setting up on my laptop. Maybe possible undocumented requirements? Setup 1: System: openSUSE 12.2 KDE 4.8 WiFi connection, typically only User Mode Networking and Host Only networking has been tried Virtualization: QEMU-KVM Setup 2: Host: system described above in Setup 1 Guest: openSUsE 12.2 server (text only, using minimal install pattern) Networking: eth0 bound to whatever virtual network is available, typically User Mode Networking 1. Running the openstack-quickstart-demosetup script on my Host(Setup 1), the script seems to have mostly run successfully but ends with the following which contains a number of errors. It may not be surprising to see HTTP related errors if the new web content is deployed in the default website (no subdirectory, no sub web) because of course I'm running other stuff in the existing local webserver already. If these errors are due to collisions with other websites, can something be modified to deploy to a different subdirectory? Hello, Am hoping to get experienced eyes on this to evaluate how much of what I'm seeing is expected and what is not. System: openSUSE 12.2 Desktop: KDE 4.8 Virtualization: QEMU-KVM Also using graphical virt-manager Hardware: Laptop with occasionally available WiFi - I have found that anything configured for bridged networking still requires a wired connection, usually binding to eth0. - I have found that when any real connection to a Network exists (wireless or wired), if a Host Only network does not exist, then the Guest will be automatically configured to use User Mode Networking <only when the NIC is created>. - When a physical connection does not exist for a Guest previously created using a NIC configured for User Mode Networking, User Mode Networking will fail with an error "service unavailable, port 5900" which likely means that a VNC connection cannot be made. - Curiously, even with no physical network connection, if a Host Only network is created and a second virtual network for the new Host Only network is added to the Guest described previously, the Guest VM will boot up (no service unavailable, port 5900 error) and can even be viewed using virt-viewer. But, on closer inspection running ifconfig in the Guest reveals only one working NIC configured with an IP address for the User Mode Network while running ifconfig on the Host reveals that only the Host Only network is running and available. So, of course, Host and Guest cannot communicate using TCP/IP with each other except using virt-viewer (should not work?). - Have not tried, but am considering the idea of configuring the Host Only network to share the same networkID as the User Mode Network (10.0.2.0/24) but make sure the DHCP ranges are different. Theoretically I think this workaround might work but shouldn't be required. Hey Peepz, we are currently trying to reduce the amount of communication channels we provide. Because of this I would like to merge the opensuse-virtual an opensuse-cloud list. I'm just not sure how. Judging from the amount of traffic we should fold opensuse-cloud into opensuse-virtual and change the description of -virtual to refer to cloud activities. What do you think? Let me know. Hi All, I've spent some time to refine the setup of Portal:Cloud (thanks to Peter Schinagl for help with the navigation feature). I also created content for the main page and created an entry for OpenNebula setup with reference to using the OBS packages. Now to the action items for the rest of you subscribers ;) 1.) Feedback on the setup, does this work for everyone? 2.) Feedback on the content of Portal:Cloud ~ what's missing ~ typos, grammer, etc. ~ stuff that doesn't make sense ~ feel free to fix as you see fit 3.) Feedback on the OpenNebula content http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Cloud_OpenNebula (see sub bullets of #2) 4.) Could someone, or a group of people, please make an effort and create a page describing the setup for OpenStack? If this were similar to the OpenNebula page that would be fantastic. http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=SDB:Cloud_OpenStack&action=edit&redl… And start editing. I am not married to the format of the "sub-pages", I used the SDB template as a starting point and made some minor modifications. Thus, if anyone has strong feelings about the look of the sub-pages and the format and wants to change it, be my guest. I just think it would be nice if they were all similar in appearance. To have a page show up in the navigation just add it to Category:Cloud. I will work on filling in the details for Eucalyptus over the next few weeks. Hi, I am wondering whether we should create Portal:Cloud in the wiki and use that as a landing page for documenting cloud stuff. I think from there we could link to a page for OpenStack, OpenNebula, and Eucalyptus. While I have tried to make the use of the OpenNebula packages as simple as possible the authentication model used by OpenNebula does not allow complete automation from a packaging point of view. Thus, there's a bit of documentation I'd like to do. I can imagine similar things apply to OpenStack and I know for certain I will have something for Eucalyptus. Rathern sticking this stuff into a blog entry on lizards, I think a wiki portal is a better approach. Thoughts? [opensuse-cloud] Changes to Virtualization:Cloud:OpenStack project in OBS

Hi everyone, before creating the opensuse-cloud mailing list, we have had a discussion between Christian Berendt (B1 systems), Gregory Haskins and Patrick Mullaney on the OpenStack packaging in the OBS project: Virtualization:Cloud:OpenStack[1]. Consensus was reached to collaborate on the OpenStack packaging for SLES and openSUSE and to create a primary repository for those packages. We also agreed on fixing some issue with Virtualization:Cloud:OpenStack, such as the fact that it currently requires users to add additional project from the build service to their system in order to be able to use the OpenStack packages. Bernhard Wiedemann and I have been working on preparing packages in home:cthiel1:openstack, that are based on the work of B1 systems. We fixed a number of bugs and tested those packages on both SLES 11 SP1 and openSUSE 11.4 and now feel comfortable to moving those packages to Virtualization:Cloud:OpenStack. With the move, we will also make changes to how the packages are built, ie. build against the base distributions. This will enable users to just add the Virtualization:Cloud:OpenStack repository and get OpenStack working. We are using the latests stable OpenStack release, codename "cactus". As soon as the next OpenStack release is done, we'll upgrade the packages in Virtualization:Cloud:OpenStack to that release. I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback.
