Safely convert an existing package into a Link / branched package?

Hi all, I think we had this topic before (2019, AFAICS), so maybe there is an update on this: How can I safely convert an existing package into a link / branch package? Without losing any changes on the "to be converted" package? Back then the only options were "osc branch -f" or manually creating the _link file. Is this still valid?
