To make it possible to know when a package could be updated to a new upstream version, I'd like to have two new attributes:
+ OBS:UpstreamVersion - would contain the latest upstream version for the upstream module
+ OBS:UpstreamTarballURL - would contain the URL of the latest upstream tarball
Right now, the idea is to have an external script update those attributes.
So, who wants to be bribed and create those attributes? :-)
Not me, but Adrian has mentioned before that there's a plan to have tarball/svn/git urls per package and pull the sources directly into the buildservice - so I bet he has something to say about creating these attributes.

For tarballs, you might want to consider something like fedora's spectool. If you could integrate spectool into the buildservice, that could take care of the downloading of tarballs.
