[Bug 581685] New: gnome setting daemon crashes everytime - GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581685 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581685#c0 Summary: gnome setting daemon crashes everytime - GLib-GObject-CRITICAL ** Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: drankinatty@suddenlinkmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=343719) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=343719) ~/.xsession-errors file User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux x86_64; U; en) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.10 Guys, This is strange. After updates ~2 weeks ago, the gnome-settings-daemon will not run in gnome and crashes every time you try and start it. The Bizarre thing is that the gnome theme settings are fine under kde4 with the gtk-qt configuration. When you attempt to open gnome-appearance you get the following error dialog: --------------- Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'. Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager. --------------- I have killed anything kde-ish and it still will not run. When run from the command line, the following error is displayed: (gnome-appearance-properties:4251): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed Needless to say, none of the themes work in gnome and all gtk apps look horrible without themes. The funny thing is, that when you first start the Appearance settings, all you settings appear and look correct for a couple of seconds until it crashes, then it all goes back to the unthemed state. Let me know what else you would like me to send. I have posted to the openSuSE list and to gnome-dev list, but I haven't gotten any fixes. Thanks. (~/.xsession-errors is attached) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. open gnome control panel 2. choose 'Appearance' 3. It crashes Actual Results: See 1,2,3 above Expected Results: The gnome setting daemon will run normally and allow you to use the appearance settings. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Then, switching to gnome, get an immediate error: ------ There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly. The last error message was: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in ------ I find gconfd-2 running as follows: /usr/lib/GConf/2/gconfd-2 11 Stopping the process 'gconftool-2 --shutdown' properly closes the process. Attempting to start with /usr/lib/GConf/2/gconfd-2 12 makes no difference, as does starting with no number: /usr/lib/GConf/2/gconfd-2 Same thing, The normal theme appears for 2-3 seconds, then the settings daemon error appears and it all goes back to crud. The same errors occurred. I'm attaching the new user xsession-error, syslog, ps ax, and screenshot as well. Notice, the screenshot was what the screen looked like after login. (I moved a dialog to put it in the middle, but that was it) The xsession-error, syslog and 'ps as' capture the state of the session. Something is definitely messed up. In the syslog, you can see there was a gvfs-fuse error 23 seconds (before) the new gnome session. It looks like the gvfs-error tripped a memory check on the fglrx driver and then then new session started at 17:54:30. I don't know what the rest of the stuff means, but I do know it adds up to a messed up gnome session. Let me know what else I can send. I started XFCE as my regular user to see if the gnome themes would work in XFCE. They worked great. The only issue I had was one setting manager crash when Qtcurve was selected. On restart, Qtcurve was working fine. Every other gnome theme worked fine in XFCE. I don't know how XFCE does it's gnome settings loading, but it has to be close to gnome. Let me know what other information I can provide. Also, when I'm in other desktops, fluxbox, pekwm, sawfish, etc.. what command would I use to load the gnome setting daemon to have firefox, etc. look right in the other desktops? KDE loads something to make it work in KDE, can I do something similar in the other desktops. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
