In particular is is no bug in an older driver version when whatever new hardware is not supported by it. There is also no need to file an enhancement request to ship an up to date version for the upcomming openSUSE 11.2 because if possible we will ship the version which will be up to date when our package version upgrade deadline for our next product will be. Therefore this bug report is two times invalid. Point being if that package is within the official OSS repository it is officially maintained and therefore it should be updated to the last upstream release before the version freeze until there's a valid reason not to do this. If that doesn't happen and there's no valid reason for it it is IMHO a valid bug because the maintainer failed because it isn't updated to the latest upstream release in time for the version freeze. Regarding your comment #12: it is totally great if you intend to update it in time for 11.2 with the latest upstream release but until then please leave that bug open so it can be tracked. I appreciate very much any non-official package via the openSUSE build service like in home:kernelhacker so that users who like to try it out (on their own risk) could find it by searching for "gutenprint" via http://software.opensuse.org/search where currently gutenprint-5.2.4-14.2 is also available for openSUSE 11.1. Very Many Thanks for it to Carl-Daniel Hailfinger! Regarding comment #2: It is no bug when a package is not upgraded to the newest version. It is not the failure of the package maintainer when he did not get the time to upgrade a package because he had to do other work with higher priority which is also a valid reason not to upgrade a package. As soon as possible (i.e. when I get time to do it), I will provide the newest stable gutenprint version via the Printing project in the openSUSE build service. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You're welcome!
I took great care in making a merge of my home:kernelhacker cups-drivers package very easy. http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=514994 User jsmeix@novell.com added comment http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=514994#c7 --- Comment #7 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> 2009-09-16 02:26:21 MDT --- It must wait after openSUSE 11.2 is done because up to this time I need the stuff in the Printing project to be exactly what there is currently in Factory/11.2 because the Printing project is currently the development project for openSUSE 11.2 and when 11.2 is finished, the Printing project becomes the development project for the next openSUSE version. FYI: For the next openSUSE version I like to spilt Gutenprint away from the huge cups-drivers package because Gutenprint is a project on its own and I like to have the packages according to the upstream projects. I would very much appreciate it when you could make your Gutenprint as a separated stand-alone "gutenprint" package and not as sub-package of the huge cups-drivers package. I want to be as much in compliance with upstream as possible. This means in particular to avoid all Suse-specific patches. For example - as far as I know - the Gutenprint main author may in particular not like our "A4" patch, because on gimp-print-devel@lists.sourceforge.net Robert Krawitz wrote: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- At least a few distributions that I'm aware of (some versions of SUSE and PCLinuxOS) apply a patch to printers.xml that force margins on letter, legal, and A4-size paper to work around a problem in 5.0.0 that we later fixed correctly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (Actually we apply a patch to "papers.xml" files.) A Gutenprint version upgrade as a new stand-alone package "gutenprint" is the perfect chance to drop all our own patches to enforce a hard reset back to 100% compliance with upstream. Just provide it "as is". Then let's see if we get bug reports. Don't worry, it is me who gets all "Printing" bugs by default ;-) I did such a hard reset back to 100% compliance with upstream already in the past for sane-backends and guess what: I got no single bug report at all because of this. I guess what they do at upstream is actually not so bad ;-) I think that this would help me most because then I could at any time which fits best for me simply make our official "gutenprint" based upon your "gutenprint" in your home project. Additionally I think that this way we get it much more tested when it can right now already be used by our normal users even with openSUSE 11.0 and 11.1 so that in the end it helps both our normal users and us. Sure. So you'll accept an updated submitrequest once 11.2 is out? Great.
For the next openSUSE version I like to spilt Gutenprint away from the huge cups-drivers package[...].
Good idea.
I can try. How do we handle compatibility with older distributions? Will cups-drivers simply list gutenprint as "Requires"? I want to minimize nasty surprises for users who upgrade. There is one thing I'm worried about: The following command line is executed inside foomatic-db-engine, but it references the gutenprint sources. Will splitting the packages still work? perl ./foomatic-kitload -k ./gutenprint/src/foomatic/foomatic-db/gutenprint-ijs.%{gutenprintmajor} -f
I reworked that patch to address the complaints of Robert. It does not touch margins anymore and only changes the order in which the paper sizes are listed to have A4 as default. If there is another way to make A4 the default, I'd like to hear about it so I can do the right thing.
Sure. I already had disabled all gutenprint patches except the one making A4 the default, but I forgot to delete the patch files. I did that now.

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=514994 User jsmeix@novell.com added comment http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=514994#c9 --- Comment #9 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> 2009-09-17 05:04:31 MDT --- Regarding compatibility with older distributions and foomatic stuff: cups-drivers does not and will not have gutenprint as RPM requirement because this would be two times wrong: 1. Gutenprint does not require anything in cups-drivers to run (see the details below). 2. When a user installs cups-drivers he may not want Gutenprint and therefore there is also currently no RPM requirement in cups-drivers for "gutenprint". I assume you confuse the binary RPMs which can be installed on the end-user's system with the source RPMs where the latter match to our package sources. I talk about to spilt the sources for Gutenprint from the cups-drivers package sources. The binary RPMs are already split. Gutenprint does not need Foomatic if CUPS is used, see the README file in the Gutenprint sources: --------------------------------------------------------------- .. use either CUPS or, if they use another printing system or no spooler at all, use Foomatic with the Ghostscript driver --------------------------------------------------------------- Neither Foomatic (i.e. "/usr/bin/foomatic-rip") nor the Gutenprint Ghostscript IJS driver "/usr/bin/ijsgutenprint..." is needed by Gutenprint when CUPS is used because Gutenprint provides the native CUPS driver "rastertogutenprint" (and its companion "commandtoepson"). Neither do we need any kind of Gutenprint Foomatic data because none of our printer setup tools uses Foomatic data but all our printer setup tools use PPD file information (basically what "/usr/sbin/lpinfo -l -m | head" outputs) in compliance how printer setup is done with CUPS, compare http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Development/Printer_Enhancement "How to set up a print queue in full compliance with CUPS" For printing with the Gutenprint driver we only need the native CUPS driver and the matching CUPS PPD files. Additionally we provide Gutenprint's GIMP plug-in in the sub-package gutenprint-gimpplugin to avoid that the plain printer driver package gutenprint has RPM requirements for tons of graphical stuff (e.g. libX11 and so on) because a printer driver must be installable on a server system without X11. Regarding CUPS PPD files: PPD files can be either provided as readymade files or (since CUPS 1.2, i.e. since openSUSE 10.2) a so called "driver" in /usr/lib/cups/driver can generate PPDs during runtime ("dynamic PPDs"). Gutenprint supports both, readymade PPD files which are made during compile time and/or generating them on the end-user's system during runtime via /usr/lib/cups/driver/gutenprint. I prefer readymade PPD files because this moves the responsibility for PPD files to our build system so that there is one possible cause of issues/bugs less on the various end-user's systems. With nowadays disk space I do not care about many readymade PPD files which are installed by default. If there is limited disk space, the admin is free to simply remove any PPD in /usr/share/cups/model/ which he does not need. If someone really wants to discuss about this, he should first of all care about wasted disk space by nowadays graphical applications ;-) FYI: An advantage of generating PPDs on the end-user's system would be when /usr/lib/cups/driver/gutenprint would query attached printers for their actual capabilities (e.g. query whether or not there is actually a duplex unit and whether or not there are which additional paper trays) and then generate a PPD which contains not all theoretically possible options for this printer model but only those options and choices which match exactly to the actually connected printer. The disadvantage of this is that when e.g. a duplex unit will be mounted later, the PPD would not contain an option to use the duplex unit so that the print queue would have to be set up anew with a new generated PPD which contains the option to use the duplex unit. We also do not need any Foomatic PPDs for the Gutenprint driver i.e. PPDs where not the native CUPS driver "rastertogutenprint" is used but Gutenprint's Ghostscript driver via Foomatic's "foomatic-rip" via an entry like this in the PPD ---------------------------------------------------------------- *cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 foomatic-rip" ---------------------------------------------------------------- where "foomatic-rip" calls Gutenprint's Ghostscript driver /usr/bin/ijsgutenprint via Ghostscript's IJS interface. For backward compatibility with older distributions and of for backward compatibility with already installes systems we may try to keep (if possible) /usr/bin/ijsgutenprint in the gutenprint package so that old existing print queues with a PPD in /etc/cups/ppd/ which uses this driver might still work. On the other hand the README file in the Gutenprint sources reads: ------------------------------------------------------------------- If you attempt to use a version of Gutenprint with PPD files not built for that precise version, the driver will fail ------------------------------------------------------------------- so that existing print queues must be re-setup in any case (or the special tool "...genppdupdate..." can be used but I wonder what is easier for a normal user in the end). Therefore I think it is best to provide no longer any Foomatic-related stuff in the gutenprint package (in particular no longer /usr/bin/ijsgutenprint). On my openSUSE 11.1 workstation I do not find "ijsgutenprint" in any of the PPDs in /usr/share/cups/model/ so that the whole issue seems to have already vanished. To see which of the PPDs in /usr/share/cups/model/ use whatever IJS Ghostscript driver, run find /usr/share/cups/model/ | xargs zgrep -l -- '-sDEVICE=ijs' (only the "hpijs" PPDs should use a IJS Ghostscript driver). When Gutenprint is in its own separated package, we can remove all Gutenprint stuff from the cups-drivers package which cleans up the cups-drivers package. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

One thing is not entirely clear to me: Given that lprng was once a supported (or at least possible) option for printing, will the move to CUPS-only support in Gutenprint break older non-CUPS setups in openSUSE 10.3 (and 11.0/11.1 if they support non-CUPS setups at all)? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

LPRng is dropped in openSUSE 11.2 so that we do not need to worry about LPRng support in 11.2 and later products. For older products (i.e. all before openSUSE 11.2) the new gutenprint package will not work if LPRng or whatever other non-CUPS spooler (or no spooler at all) is used on a particular user's system. Regrading LPRng in general: Some time ago (to find out if dropping LPRng could make sense) I asked on our opensuse and opensuse-de lists to find out if LPRng is still used, see http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2007-11/msg01723.html and http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-de/2007-11/msg00967.html There was no response at all on the opensuse list and little response on opensuse-de but nobody said that it would be impossible for him to switch to CUPS. The advantage of a move to CUPS-only support in Gutenprint is that it removes possible but unneccessary maintenance load because I would not have to fix bugs in the non-CUPS parts of Gutenprint. Such bugs are even more likely because the non-CUPS parts of Gutenprint are probably almost totally untested because almost nobody actually uses non-CUPS parts of Gutenprint (neither do I) and I have a particular feeling how much the non-CUPS parts of Gutenprint are used by the upstream authors ;-) Imagine a security bug in /usr/bin/ijsgutenprint which I must fix regardless how many users actually use it e.g. a possible exploit just because /usr/bin/ijsgutenprint is installed and executable. Note that I only talk about our official gutenprint package. Of course anybody who likes can provide Gutenprint with Foomatic and IJS Ghostscript driver support via the openSUSE build service. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Afterwards submit a separated stand-alone gutenprint 5.2.5 package as new package to the Printing project, see http://en.opensuse.org/Factory/Packaging When in the Printing project cups-drivers without gutenprint and the stand-alone gutenprint package work well, in particular work well with CUPS 1.4.2 in the Printing project (see bug #575544) then we can think about to submit all of them to Factory. I would not mind if you reject to do such ugly clean-up work because usually you won't get plaudit from users when it works but complaints when something does no longer work ;-) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
