[Bug 446349] New: YaST2 Partitioner Menu exceeds 600 lines
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=446349 Summary: YaST2 Partitioner Menu exceeds 600 lines Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 5 Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jimomura@pathcom.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Beta-Customer Using the GNOME desktop, YaST2 Partitioner's menu exceeds 600 lines. This makes it unusable for smaller displays. Actually, all windows have to be smaller than 600 lines because of bottom Panels. A design rule of around 580 lines would probably be safer. There may be other windows in this application that have the same problem -- I only noted this one. But it was not what I was mainly concerned with when I was using it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unfortunately, things are not necessarily better. - turn off "desktop effects" [Note: if "destop effects" is on, then the first window is shown mainly above the screen, but that was not what I was referring to originally.] - start partitioner [warning window comes up] - click on "yes" [it detects the drivers, gives me a warning window about an SD card in a slot which cannot be fully handled by parted] - select the hard driver "/dev/sda" - click on the "next" button [*it crashes here and the window disappears] At this point, there is nothing to show in a screenshot. This was not actually what I saw before, but for now I guess it is what needs to be fixed. Checking the processes, "parted" is not there. There is a "startpar" process that is "Sleeping 0 0 2486 0" is that part of this program? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I will try to upload a picture of the starting window which is mainly above the screen. Again, this is "a" problem, and is probably caused by the window being bigger than what it should be on a 600 line screen, but it was not really what I was referring to originally. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Anyway, if it is, then it is ok now. As long as "desktop effects" is off, it displays properly. I do not know if there might be a side effect caused by the fact that I was using "partitioner" through the GNOME LiveCD installer program. Now that I think about it, my title is wrong. It showed up first on the Beta 4 disc. If I have time, I might try it again, but I do not really want to re-install Beta 4 (which is where the original problem showed up). Maybe it is already fixed in Beta 5? I will try to correct my title. However, the above noted issues in Comment #2 and Comment #3 are currently in Beta 5, so maybe these are all that are left now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Behavior seems the same. I think I understand this now. The "Next" option aborts the editor if there is no task awaiting execution. This is probably because it was intended to be used in the context of the "Installer". As it is, this is not really a good idea in either case because the interface is not sufficiently explicit. Unless you are sitting with the documentation in your lap, or are very familiar with it, there is a good chance that you will hit the "next" button expecting more options (which is what I did). In such a case, you should have another dialog box saying something like: "No changes to be made. Exit the Partition Editor? [Return To Partition Editor] [Exit]" Anyway sorry about the confusion. I was dealing with a few issues all at once and forgot that this one had arisen back in Beta 4. Yeah, that's definitively a bug. (It should be renamed to "Ok" according to the new yast style guide.) Arvin has removed himself from this bug report though; could you open a new report for that one? A couple of searches don't catch it reported. (In reply to comment #10 from Jim Omura)

Yep, it's bug 442052, and the fix for that one extends to all these other tools as well. When a tool needs more size than the default one, the GTK UI just blindly gives it to them -- because the window manager is expected to handle it. We now clamp the requested size to that of the screen -- as far as I can tell, we behave exactly like the Qt UI now... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
