[Bug 450747] New: 11.1 rc1 i686 KDE Live CD crashes on boot
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=450747 Summary: 11.1 rc1 i686 KDE Live CD crashes on boot Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: i586 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Larry.Finger@lwfinger.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Customer On an old Mtech laptop, the 11.1 rc1 i686 KDE Live CD crashes when booting. The final lines on the screen are: Write protecting the kernel text: 2372k Write protecting the kernel read-only data: 1776k Kernel panic - not synching: attempted to kill init! This failure occurs for all boot options: "openSUSE Live (KDE)", "Failsafe Settings", and "Check Installation Media". The media boots on a VirtualBox VM and the media was checked on the VM. The CPU on this machine is an AMD K6-2/450 with 512 MB RAM. It currently runs openSUSE 10.3 with a 2.6.28-rc6 kernel. It is my test box for debugging BCM43XX devices that come in a PCCard format. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The kernel loads and starts initializing, then panics with the output that I posted. I booted the Live CD on another machine and got the configuration from /proc/config.gz. I am currently building a 2.6.27 system with the configuration to see if I can reproduce the panic with a kernel that I generate. If I can, then it will be a matter of tweaking the configuration. That build has about 1 hour to go. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unfortunately, it boots just fine. I'm not sure why this kernel doesn't panic. The base system on that computer is openSUSE 10.3. Could that be the difference? That kernel also does not include any of the special mods that are included in the kernel on the CD. Undoubtedly, there are other differences. Any suggestions on what I should try next? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I used the configuration file from the Live CD and built the kernel for my problem laptop. It booted just fine, which makes me suspect the initrd on the CD.
