[Bug 1032049] New: Kernel freezes when changing to tty7 after shutting down X.org
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1032049 Bug ID: 1032049 Summary: Kernel freezes when changing to tty7 after shutting down X.org Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: nemeth.tamas.net@nyme.hu QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- When I start my TumbleWeed system in graphical mode, but later I shutdown X.org running on tty7, and the I try to switch to tty7 using ctrl+alt+F7, then the system becomes totally unresponsive. It doesn't even detect Num Lock. I have to reset it. But when I start the system in multi user (non graphical) mode, then I can change to the unoccupied tty7, then the system doesn't freeze. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I wonder whether it's due to my fix patch. Does the symptom appear on both patched and unpatched kernels?
It also happens on the with the standard initrd-4.10.5-1-default kernel, too. I'll test it with vanilla in a few minutes. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

OK, I tested it: The freeze also happens with the standard 4.10.5-1-default, but it doesn't with 4.10.8-1.g5cf8f56-vanilla. It seems to me that this crash is caused by some already included older SuSE patches, but not by your latest one. In addition X.org shuts down MUCH quicker on the vanilla kernel (using telinit 3) than on SuSE's default kernel. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Interesting. There aren't so many patches on TW kernel (unlike Leap). Do you still have the old 4.10.x default showing the previous VT bug? If yes, could you check whether the same problem happens with that? Also, it's interesting to see whether the same bug appears in 4.11-rc... It's available in OBS Kernel:HEAD repo.
In addition X.org shuts down MUCH quicker on the vanilla kernel (using telinit 3) than on SuSE's default kernel.
Hmm, I guess it's rather about the mode full reset due to VT change that is missing in 4.10.x. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Sorry, I removed all the old kernels, so I can't test it anymore.

4.11.0-rc6-1.g5a51416-default works very well. The bug is solved in that version.

4.11.0-rc6-1.g5a51416-default seems to solve this problem, too :-) But not this: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1031893 -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
