[Bug 916804] New: patterns-openSUSE-plasma5_basis fresh install causes non-installation of rest of desktop software
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=916804 Bug ID: 916804 Summary: patterns-openSUSE-plasma5_basis fresh install causes non-installation of rest of desktop software Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 201502* Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace Assignee: kde-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: jon@grossart.net QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Installing patterns-openSUSE-plasma5_basis conflicts with kde4_basis and kde packages. This causes the non-installation of several base patterns that leave many default applications (KDE and otherwise) off of the fresh system. Normal System patterns not installed: patterns-openSUSE-games patterns-openSUSE-imaging patterns-openSUSE-multimedia patterns-openSUSE-non_oss patterns-openSUSE-office KDE Patterns not installed: patterns-openSUSE-kde patterns-openSUSE-kde4_basis patterns-openSUSE-kde4_internet patterns-openSUSE-kde4_utilities With the new organization of KF5/Plasma 5/KDE Apps, that there needs to be a whole new setup for the installation. Even on Plasma 1, it makes more sense to move to the KF5 apps, as those are the only ones being developed (other than bug fixes) going forward. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

From where do you get patterns-openSUSE-plasma5_basis ?? At this moment the openSUSE KDE Community team does NOT offer ANY Plasma5 patterns.
Working with patterns have their advantages and disadvantages. Deinstalling a package that belongs to a pattern, will cause that the pattern is being removed. However that does NOT mean that the applications that were installed through this pattern will also be removed. They will remain on the system and will be updated as normal. Please clarify where you got this pattern from. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

as long as Plasma 5 is not default, this is a won't/can't fix -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I got this pattern from the Tumbleweed repos where it provided by the KDE team. I know that uninstalling the basis doesn't remove the packages, but it also doesn't pull in any future updates to that pattern then either. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

That's fine -- but shouldn't the pattern then have dependencies on those other patterns to still install a full desktop experience? Or create a separate "KDE 5" (I know that doesn't exist) path that prepares to when it is default and can be tested in parallel. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
