It looks as if a rotation from "Landsacpe" to "Portrait" should have happened but it partially failed. But I am not yet fully conviced that it is actually a bug in cairo because my PostScript printer fails to print your initial PostScript file so that the root cause could be something in your initial PostScript file which introduce something in Ghostscript's (ps2pdf) generated PDF file so that finally cairo's conversion from PDF back to PostScript fails. I am not at all a sufficient PostScript and/or PDF expert to analyze PostScript and PDF files regarding possible issues therein. Background information: As far as I noticed several PostScript <-> PDF conversion issues on the Ghostscript bugzilla, the tompost root cause are various kind of issues in the initial files in the various bug reports. The Ghostscript authors implement tons of workarounds and graceful behaviour for "strange" input files which is the reason that often Ghostscript can process files where other PostScript and PDF processing tools fail. Regarding "acroread words fine on these PDFs" in comment#0: For PDF files the Adobe Reader (acroread) is often the only one that can process files where other PDF readers fail. Therefore for certain PDF files often the Adobe Reader is the only tool which can show and print them correctly. The reason that you can print via the Adobe Reader is: When you print a PDF from the Adobe Reader, the Adobe Reader itself converts the PDF to PostScript so that the Adobe Reader sends PostScript to CUPS. You can call $ acroread -toPostScript -rotateAndCenter -size a4 file.pdf (or use "-size letter" - see "acroread -help" for more options) to manually convert PDF into PostScript. The Adobe Reader provides "Autorotate Scale and Center" features to make the the content of the original PDF page fit on paper and that is the reason why the printout fits on paper when printing from the Adobe Reader, compare http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Landscape_Printing In contrast when you print a PDF not via the Adobe Reader, CUPS runs first of all /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops which is a wrapper that calls /usr/bin/pdftops that actually converts PDF to PostScript (/usr/bin/pdftops belongs to the poppler-tools RPM).
