[Bug 1065574] New: Add desktop menu Crypto Wallets
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1065574 Bug ID: 1065574 Summary: Add desktop menu Crypto Wallets Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.3 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE Applications Assignee: opensuse-kde-bugs@opensuse.org Reporter: richard.bos@xs4all.nl QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Crypto currencies are very popular in recent time, and are only gaining more popularity. As there are many, many crypto currency coins, and each coin requires (often) its own wallet, one gets in the end many wallets installed. To distinquish those wallets from other programs, it is handy / requires that there is an own desktop menu that holds all those wallets. (I created one for myself...) Related report: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1043401 So, please add a new desktop menu: Crypto Wallets (or Crypto Currency). This could be a main menu, or if that is not OK, make it a sub menu of Internet. Looking forward to see this menu added with openSUSE, making openSUSE possible a frontrunner in the crypto space. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've chosen the component KDE applications, but the requests is valid for all other desktops. But there is no general desktop component.
Neither the system or a single desktop creates these groups - the single packages do via their .desktop files. As such you cannot request for this group to be replaced, but rather the single packages need to place themselves into the group. You can read about the XDG Desktop Menu Specification: https://specifications.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/menu-spec-1.0.html A set of groups exists, and group compliance in openSUSE is enforced via packaging checks. I am not aware of this type of group being proposed in the XDG menu spec. Package of this type should be in Network;P2P until this changes. https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Packaging_desktop_menu_categories https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Packaging_guidelines#Desktop_files -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

From technical side, I can imagine:
1) Introduce additional category Cryptocurrencies usable with Office (for wallets and financial software) and Utility (for miners), eventually Education (for educational software). Desktop file would look then: Categories=Office;Cryptocurrencies; 2) Maybe Cryptocurrencies could be replaced with something less specific that could include other Peer-to-Peer economy applications, or even other Peer-to-Peer applications. It could be used with Office, Utility or more. Desktop file would look then: Categories=Office;P2P; 3) Introduce additional category Cryptography that can be used with Office, Utility, and it could be used with a combination with other Categories to get a better resolution. Menu layout authors can then decide to separate cryptography technologies. Desktop file would look then: Categories=Office;Finance;Cryptography; Menu authors can decide to make a dedicated folder for such combination of tags. If they decide not to do that, cryptocurrencies will be in the same folder like Finance folder. 4) Introduce additional category P2P that can be used with Office, Utility and more, and it could be used with a combination with other Categories to get a better resolution. Menu layout authors can then decide to separate cryptography technologies. Desktop file would look then: Categories=Office;Finance;P2P; Menu authors can decide to make a dedicated folder for such combination of tags. If they decide not to do that, cryptocurrencies will be in the same folder like Finance folder. P. S.: Looking at the current spec, Education;Finance; should be allowed as well. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
