To reproduce this issue is easy with following: cryptsetup create mytest /dev/sdb mkfs.ext3 /dev/mapper/mytest mount -t ext3 -o barrier=0 /dev/mapper/mytest /media touch /media/abcde umount /media dmsetup remove /dev/mapper/mytest ls /sys/block/sdb/holders/ When barrier=0, the symlink is removed correctly. When barrier=1, there'll be a dangling symlink. But it's not my area.
