[Bug 461820] New: XDMCP failes across OpenSUSE versions
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=461820 Summary: XDMCP failes across OpenSUSE versions Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: james.knott@rogers.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: Community User I recently tried upgrading some of my computers to OpenSUSE 11.1. However, one problem I experienced is that systems running OpenSUSE 11.0 cannot access a system running OpenSUSE 11.1, using XDMCP. After logging on to the remote system, the screen goes black, except for the mouse cursor. The keyboard is also locked. It is possible to connect to the system, with the locked console, by ssh or XDMCP, so the CPU has not locked up, only the keyboard & display. This issue also occurred with the upgrade to 11.0. Why should XDMCP be sensitive to OpenSUSE versions? Also, I can connect using Xming on XP, so the problem is something unique to OpenSUSE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Trying to connect to remote system, running OpenSUSE 11.1 When connecting to the remote system, using XDMCP, after logging in, the display goes black with only the mouse cursor showing. The keyboard is completely unresponsive. I cannot use C-A-D to reboot, nor C-A-BKSP to restart X. I can connect to that computer from another one, using ssh, to reboot or halt the computer. Rebooting clears the locked keyboard & black screen. I use XDMCP frequently between computers and do not experience this, when all computers are running 11.0. I upgraded two computers to 11.1 and I can no longer use XDMCP to access those computers. I can use it between the two computers running 11.1. This problem also occurred with the upgrade to 11.0. It does not affect access using Xming on Windows XP. To verify this, set up one computer with OpenSUSE 11.0 and another with 11.1 and see what happens, when using XDMCP between them. I have four computers here running OpenSUSE, different makes and models, one 64 bit and the others 32 bit. The problem will affect all of them, so it's not likely a hardware issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When I say the keyboard in unresponsive, I mean precisely that. I can try anything, and get absolutely no response whatsoever. When this problem occurs, I am facing a black screen and the only way out is to reboot via ssh or killing the power. Incidentally, in my career, I have spent some 4 years at IBM providing software support, most of it 3rd level. I know how to do basic tests, to determine a problem. Has anyone tried the situation I described? That is two computers, one running OpenSUSE 11.0, the other 11.1 and using XDMCP from the 11.0 system to access the 11.0 system? A. When you log into the machine running the Xserver via ssh, can you do a vt switch by doing something like # chvt 1 (as root)?
No. The ssh session locks up, but can be cleared with CTL-C
OK.
B. From remote find the PID of the Xserver and do an strace -p <PID> Is the server woken up by a SIGALRM from time to time?
How would I check that? Is that default for OpenSUSE? I haven't changed anything like that.
The output of strace will show you. If there is no output then the Xserver is not woken up.
C. From remote get the PID of the Xserver and do: gdb /usr/bin/X <PID> to attach the debugger to the running Xserver. In gdb please do:

The 11.0 -> 11.1 connection is markedly slower and on exit it locked my laptop hard. (ctrl+alt+bkspace and F7 and F8 ineffective). Another symptom of the problem is when the hardlock occurs, the numlock key on my Toshiba 205D illuminates. Most of the time I can ssh into the laptop when the user interface is hardlocked, but cannot shutdown. It appears the shutdown command is ignored. This results in having to shutdown the laptop hard (press and hold the power button) I have included my /var/log/Xorg.* files in a bz2, but I don't think they captured the event. I will attempt to catch the files via ssh with the hardlock next time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Egbert, this is from David, not James, but: I sent the Xorg.[01].log files that I had. For the 11.1 box, the display manager is: DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm4" DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="yes" To get a login on the 11.1 box, I use: 'X :1 -query arete' The hostname is obviously 'arete'. I have had *zero* local display problems since SuSE 8.0. As mentioned in my other post XDMCP works great with 11.0-to-11.0 connections, it's just the 11.0-to-11.1 connection that locks the computer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I can confirm that compiz/desktop effects is *not* enabled on the remote 11.1 system. It is running kde3 with only the base system of kde4 as needed for the kde apps that now use the kde4 base even when run from kde3. I have downloaded xnest and it is installed. I'm still working on figuring out how to start the remote session with it. I'll let you know if that works. As for the potential fglrx driver issue, the question is still open as to why it works great with XDMCP 11.0 -> 11.0 and 11.0 -> 10.3, but only causes problems with 11.0 -> 11.1 connections. I'll try the radeon driver and see if there is any difference. However, I wouldn't expect any change. The 8-9 driver I'm using has been bulletproof in all respects. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The keyboard is locked and I can't do anything with it. I have to use ssh from another computer to reboot or hit the power switch. Also, I have been remotely using XDMCP the way I described for years. It works fine 11.0 to 11.0. So, requiring the use of that X -query command, instead of the method I described indicates a problem in itself. All those permission denied problems you are seeing as root seem to indicate something like that. When I tried this I used xdm instead of kdm4 on the remote system as it was unclear and not stated anywhere which display mamager was used. I've retested with a 10.3 as local system: Retrying with kdm4 I also get the plasma issue using Xnest as Xserver: without plasma the desktop is unusable. If I use a "regular" Xserver everything is fine. Doing the same with an 11.0 I see the problems described. The cause is an aboart in an Xrealloc() probably due to an allocation mismatch. This happens in Xkb code: #7 0x0000000000577bbb in Xrealloc () #8 0x000000000056b8f4 in SrvXkbResizeKeyType () #9 0x00000000005492ab in ProcXkbSetMap () #10 0x000000000044f942 in Dispatch () It looks like this issue is solely an 11.0 issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
