[Bug 351915] New: NO CPU Throttling applied to I386 Intel Celeron 2.4Mhz
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=351915 Summary: NO CPU Throttling applied to I386 Intel Celeron 2.4Mhz Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i386 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer Boot Log reviles NO CPU throttling applied to the following and this is confirmed by dynamic CPU statistics available from KDE System Guard showing a static CPU frequency at 23999Mhz despite processor load from both user and system. Details follows:- CPU = Intel Celeron 2.4Mgz with Socket 478 Chipset=Intel 865PE/Intel ICH5 Motherboard is pre-set to default 'AUTO' maintain Hardware/Software throttling/overclocking, however the O/S is NOT dictating either and Hardware elects by to obey software O/S initiated support CPU frequency. Very loath to change default as BIOS ONLY provides an Overclocking percentile - overriding software and terminating Hardware Throttling of CPU frequency. - Motherboard specs carry severe warnings against altering this setting to change CPU Frequency to a PERMANENT overclocking value. I think switch 'l' is not an available switch It is a one. watch -n1 ".." will execute the following command every second and show its output.
If /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/ is emtpy: That means your machine's BIOS does not export a Thermal Zone device via ACPI (and thermal driver is loaded). How do think that the machine shutdowns were temperature related? If the thermal driver is involved, it will check the temperature and shut down the machine gracefully if the critical thermal trip point is exceeded. You will see a message in /var/log/messages: Critical temperature reached, shutting down (or similar, the current temperature is also stated there). If it is not the thermal driver (in your case cannot be if thermal_zone is empty), you cannot see this message. If your machine hangs/shut downs are really temperature related it will simply turn off, but this can also come from other problems. E.g. I would first try a BIOS update and a memory test if you see hard switch offs. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Given the above information is is perfectly clear that ACPI drivers are NOT required to monitor CPU temp and are absent. The Kernel is functioning correctly monitoring and throttling on this PC without error. This bug was logged an a Kernel bug and clearly it has nothing to do with the presence of any ACPI drivers for the Kernel to both monitor and throttle the CPU frequency. I am interested How do you think the CPU temp is monitored as your previous statements are incorrect????????????? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
