When the system boots, it tries to start lightdm / the X server and the screen flashes a few times - but most of the time, lightdm crashes. If it doesn't crash, authentication doesn't work correctly and I can't log in (I just get kicked back to lightdm). Somehow, this is caused by the power save mode on the wifi interface because I can "work around" the problem: After booting, I have to log in as root and run these commands: iwconfig wlan0 power off service network restart telinit 3 telinit 5 Then, the X server comes up normally and I can log in and work. Switching from NetworkManager to wicked and leaving the wifi device unconfigured also leads to the X server starting normally - but a laptop without wifi is kind of pointless and I need to be able to easily connect to various networks. I tried to find out how to disable the power management on the wifi device permanently but couldn't figure it out. Is there a way to achieve this? While it would be nice to have wifi with a working powersave mode, it's much more elemental to me to have a normally starting X server, even if without powersaving.
