Granted, this only happens on cards that have one subdevice, but that seems to includes most sound cards these days.

Oops, this should be: where the pulseaudio daemon _isn't_ running. Ouch, that's too bad they "Require: esound" (isn't that against suse packaging policy?). There's probably not that many packman packages that do this. Probably the latter since packages requiring 'esound' are probably depending on libesd.so.0 and not /usr/bin/esd.
