[Bug 234475] New: HP NX 9420 shuts down with Powersaved
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=234475 Summary: HP NX 9420 shuts down with Powersaved Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: HP OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: m.magua@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Hi I own an an HP NX 9420 laptop. When I boot with Powersaved running without the AC adapter plugged in, just before GDM starts the laptop drops to runlevel 0 and shuts down all services cleanly. If I disable Powersaved with chkconfig then remove the AC adapter this does not happen. What I did was edit /etc/sysconfig/powersave/common and change ACPI_MODULES="" to ACPI_MODULES="ac batter fan button processor" leaving thermal out. This seems to work. I can boot with powersaved enabled.

Well no luck here with this kernel. I could only get around it by doing what I did above and keeping thermal out. Btw I am using the latest bios (F.14). Attached is my acpidump. Not sure whether this works automatically when you try to install the new kernel with "yast -i kernel-xy.rpm" Never boot another kernel, because of the other bug stated above (mouse interference on HP laptops). On beginning best is to boot this one twice. Maybe it already works now? I expect no suspend to disk is needed to run into this? What kind of process/service is this?: valhalla atieventsd[3908]: ATI External Events Daemon started... valhalla atieventsd[3908]: Event daemon control socket created valhalla atieventsd[3908]: acpid connection established Can you try to disable this one, I don't know it, maybe there is some interference? It should help if you modify a variable to: THERMAL_POLLING_FREQUENCY="15" (maybe you can trigger the bug even faster by writing a value of "1" to it?) in /etc/sysconfig/powersave/thermal and restart the powersaved? Not sure whether this variable still has affect, a lot powersave functionality moved to hal, you can check by: cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/polling_frequency must show values of "15" now. Everything fine now, or does it still shut down (immediately or after some time or after (un)plug AC?) If it works now, can you try to increase the polling frequency of each thermal zone again and try to trigger this again. Does it get triggered when polling_frequency of a special thermal zone gets increased, or does all/more polling frequencies be increased: echo 1 > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ0/polling_frequency (does it shut down?) echo 20 > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ0/polling_frequency echo 1 > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ1/polling_frequency (does it shut down?) .. if still not shut down, try setting all to 1 sec polling: echo 1 > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ0/polling_frequency echo 1 > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ1/polling_frequency .. It could also be that it's only triggered when powersaved is started, it reads out a lot ACPI values and triggers a lot because of some kind of race Hmm, if you are willing to help I can compile you an ACPI debug kernel. I doubt we have a chance to find out what's going on without one. Maybe Intel already knows about this? This ships with the binary ati fglrx drivers... I will try what you have suggested, currently downloading that kernel and it's source. PS: My laptop does not hold it's charge very well and when I disconnect my AC there's a high pitched noise from the laptop. I went to my local HP authorized repair center and they've ordered a new battery and motherboard for me. Quite frankly I'm sick of anything which says HP on it. To think that this laptop got certified by Novel and HP for linux is absolutely insane. How can something be certified if ACPI functions dont work? I may as well append acpi=off to my kernel boot line in grub. This is the last HP I'll ever buy. Ordering myself an IBM Lenovo 3000 N100.
