[Bug 229584] New: upgrade to 10.2 from 10.1 fails with segfault or dependency loop
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229584 Summary: upgrade to 10.2 from 10.1 fails with segfault or dependency loop Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jpschewe@mtu.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com I've successfully installed openSUSE 10.2 on a clean system and it works really well. I tried to upgrade another system from 10.1 to 10.2 and I got to where I can pick which packages to install. Not surprisingly I was told that there were conflicts that needed to be manually resolved. So I went through and resolved them. They were problems with pinentry and two sun JVMs being installed. Each time I go to resolve the dependencies I either get into the situation where the dependency conflict dialog comes up with nothing in it and I'm unable to get out of package selection or I get a segfault. I've tried both with and without the add-on product for non-oss. I've only tried one mirror site (http://suse.mirrors.tds.net). I'd really like to get my upgrade to finish, but at this point I don't see it happening. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Why this bug despite marked as duplicate? It is the only one regarding the final opensuse 10.2 release. Yast2 dies reproducible while initially solving dependencies after entering the "package" selection under "options for the update" (translated from german install): [base] Exception.cc(log):94 QueueItemConflict.cc(operator()):306 THROW: QueueItemConflict.cc(operator()):306: Unhandled status in ConflictProcess I'm booting from openSUSE-10.2-GM-i386-CD1.iso and try to upgrade from 10.1 to 10.2 from either network or local disk (same problem). Again, I'm reopening this bug for three reasons: * Bug marked as fixed but howto upgrade from the Goldmaster ISO? Please mark as fixed only with providing information _how_ to fix! A comment here would be sufficient IMHO. * No indication which packages cause the bug (would allow removal of the problematic packages in advance for a workaround) * This is something I cannot fix myself like other update problems in the past (md/lvm not supported, screwed pam config prevents root login, etc). I've been upgrading SuSE since 4.2 (four dot two) so I've already seen a little but nothing like this, effectively an update blocker. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229584 ------- Comment #16 from jpschewe@mtu.net 2007-01-10 07:58 MST ------- Unfortunately a number of bugs were just closed before vacation with no information on where to get the fix, thus leaving us hanging when it would have been nice to upgrade our systems. Bugs related to this that were closed in a similar fashion (and we would like the fixes for them) include bug 225278, bug 231461, and bug 225218. The packages that I was having trouble with are listed above in the comments. Given the problems we've had with the installer, I suspect that once we are able to get at the fixed installer, all will be well. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229584 ------- Comment #17 from aj@novell.com 2007-01-10 09:54 MST ------- Bugs like these have to get fixed before a release. Bugs get normally marked as fixed for the next product. This is normal process after the release of a product. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229584 ------- Comment #19 from walter.haidinger@gmx.at 2007-01-10 13:19 MST ------- regarding comment #15: Thanks for the reply. This is really a showstopper for me so I was somewhat impatient. Glad you're back! Unfortunately I have to clue which packages are causing the ConflictProcess exception, not even from y2log (see comment #11). If I had, I'd have removed the packages before the upgrade. Yast2 crashes after some seconds of thought whenever I enter the package selection option in the upgrade menu for the first time. I never get a prompt or message box or else. regarding comment #17: Of course I'm not asking for a new goldmaster. I'd be satisfied with _any_ workaround which would allow me to upgrade from 10.1 to 10.2 (other than installing from scratch, that is ;-) Is there a way to make Yast2's logging more verbose to identify the "bad" packages? If so, how do I enable this when booting from CD? Is there a debug boot option? If not, how about a special mini iso with Yast2 debugging enabled? Just for us here to download. Hhm, while I'm thinking about it: Perhaps running strace attached to Yast2 on another virtual console could provide some hints! Or for an even more radical approach: Is a manual upgrade possible without Yast at all? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I've attached the last part (of 3) of y2log here. I do have the whole /var/log/YaST2 if you need it (about 14MB gzipped). Now for the good news: After removing libgcj-4.1.0-25.rpm and just in case it's dependecies gettext-devel, gcc-java and libgcj-devel), I tried to upgrade once more. This time, YaST2 did not crash while parsing the package dependencies and I could modify packages in the Select->Packages menu of the installation just as expected! :-) I've also saved the full logs of the working installation attempt. This pretty much would solve the problem for me as it _seems_ that I can now run the upgrade next week. Regarding the ISOs from comment #27: I've got an i586 system so I cannot use the x86-64 images. I specified a number of them to keep and some, such as acroread, were still uninstalled. 3) I received an error about the installation of guile and eventually needed to just ignore the error and remove the old package once the system came up. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229584 ------- Comment #35 from walter.haidinger@gmx.at 2007-01-21 08:23 MST ------- Since no i586 ISOs to test have been provided, I've tried to upgrade today. Good news: everything went smoothly. :-) Therefore I'd propose the following workaround to upgrade from 10.1 to 10.2: * If Yast2 crashes resolving package dependencies and /var/log/YaST2/y2log shows "Unhandled status in ConflictProcess" (see comment #10), then try again with ZYPP_FULLLOG=1 (see comments #21 to #23). * /var/log/YaST2/y2log should then list the package which makes Yast2 crash. * remove the package manually * try again. the upgrade show work now, i.e. Yast2 should not crash anymore * add the manually remove package in the package selection dialog again A bit tedious but that worked for me. If this bug is only affecting a small number of people, the workaround above is sufficient IMHO. Therefore, since I've reopened the bug, I'd say it may be closed with, well, what is appropriate?
