I see the problem in a gnome terminal (TERM=xterm-256color), an xterm (TERM=xterm) and in the Linux console (TERM=linux) alike. I have no idea how to set a custom terminfo so most likely I did not do that ;-) I have the standard package from Leap 42.1: terminfo-5.9-53.4.x86_64 Is there any other environment variable that may matter? It seems that something is going wrong during the compilation. ncursesw should be default since 2008 (see below). Surprisingly, other utilities are linked with ncurses as well, but not affected by the mangling (e. g. lsblk uses the same characters as well, and they are displayed correctly). (Maybe just the code for ncurses is no more well tested.) Re-linking everything against ncursesw sounds like a correct solution. It causes a situation, where UTF-8 characters are passed to a a non-widechar curses library. The mangling itself happens inside libncurses. The error appears only in code, where ncurses and widechar are used together. That is why lsblk uses the same part of code works OK. But automake system was rewritten in time between, and check was ported to the new one. However the new version looks like a straightforward port of the old one, something is going wrong and attempt to link with -lncursesw is not checked.
