However, I do not think that it makes sense to make the permissions of such device files name dependent. Thus, I would strongly suggest to adjust the permissions in general to 0400, still not optimum - but noone but root or some process with similar permissions ought to acces those files IMHO. In case of wlan interfaces it may be "wlan", "eth", or also "ath", "ra", ... The name depends on the driver in the kernel, that assigns the interface names. There are different drivers on 11.1 (ath_pci) and 11.3 (ath5k or ath9k)... You can rename it adopting the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file (that matches the hardware and assigns a persistent interface name for it). I hope you enjoyed them. But you didn't ask for this. I configured the wlan interface via the tradtional method (ifup) by yast. And I did not touch those files by hand, any configuration occured via yast. I accidentally stumbled across the fact that the permissions are as I denoted before. And be assured, the WIRELESS_WPA_PASSWORD can be found in that file - otherwise I would not have mentioned. On my netbook at home this denotes 0600 root.root, as written in #2 IMHO there is absolutely no need for anyone but root to access those files, so I would never distinguish - just set all ifcfg-XXX files to 0400 root.root and _this_ issue is fixed.
