[Bug 409499] New: Evolution 2.22 sound notification config - Docs in error, sound defaults to annoying BEEP!
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=409499 Summary: Evolution 2.22 sound notification config - Docs in error, sound defaults to annoying BEEP! Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Evolution AssignedTo: bnc-team-evolution@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jrobiso2@ford.com QAContact: lakhil@novell.com Found By: --- Environment: 1. openSUSE 11.0 updated from 10.3 w/ Packman, OpenOffice-Stable, Mozilla repo's added. 2. KDE4 installed, but using KDE3 due to beta state of 4. 3. Evolution 2.22 (per distro) used for Exchange account at work, gmail (imap) at home. SCPM choice on startup separates configs. Upon new mail arrival, Evolution gives an ugly "BEEEP!!" whose volume cannot be controlled, muted, etc. even with "setterm -blength 0" in /etc/init.d/boot.local, which is supposed to disable beeps. Evolution 2.22 pdf documentation says "New mail" sound choice is in Edit, Preferences, Mail, General Tab. It isn't. By luck I found that New Mail sound configuration is in the Edit, Plugins, Mail Notification, then click the Configuration tab for that plugin. For previous users, this is REALLY not an expected location for this. Evolution ROCKS!, even in KDE. <satire> But that annoying BEEP just might have someone on a roof with a high-powered rifle soon! </satire> Can we pass this upstream to the Evo guys? I think the easiest solution is to fix the docs, rather than alter the code. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So . . . how do we change the default system "bell"? "setterm -blength 0" isn't doing it. I volunteer to create the default system bell sound - I'll get a recording of me saying "Beeeep" in a nice calm baritone. :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Open KDE kontrol center, in KDE4 Personal/Accessibility screen - unmark "Use system bell" checkbox and this works! for all applications running inside my current X session - bell has gone even in non-kde applications (KDE applications did not use bell actually) - in firefox, xterm, eclipse (I have found beep there too) and even in Yast (though I run it as root). And you can even put you barithone sample there too :) (use customized beep option) The beep did not disappear in console, and I think it will disappear with ctrl+alt+backspace, but this does not scare -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I then moved the "Duration" slider to 1ms. Click Apply. Then UNCHECK using bell for notifications. Click Apply again. End result? When programs tried to use Bell (no Notification sound is set, etc. or for whatever reason) it used the 1ms timings even though the option is unchecked. This worked, and I no longer have the annoying beep in pidgin, firefox, etc. However, none of this changes the fact that the Evolution docs are in error in regards to how/where to set the sound for ITS notification. The Evolution docs still need fixed. I'm thinking we should split out the "General" BEEP problems from this bug entry, as it is actually a separate issue from the Evolution docs being in error.
