Firmware doesn't belong to FOSS, so it's really above our hands.
Yes, I understand that. I never intended to have binary blobs (which is why I use nouveau, otherwise I would simply use the proprietary driver). So I am back to: How come VDPAU and VA-API don't work in Leap 15.1, considering they are listed as supported ("DONE") by nouveau for VP5? Yes, I am reading the "Firmware" section on the link you: "However, VP1/2/3/4/5 all require firmware to operate that is presently extracted from the NVIDIA binary driver." But does this mean that VDPAU and VA-API would only work if a binary blob (EXTFW) is installed? If it means that - then what good is nouveau at all (FOSS-wise) if one still must use proprietary blobs? And the other question which remains: how come vdpau and vaapi (without "-copy") worked in smplayer in Leap 15.0? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes.

At least the kernel code is open.
And the other question which remains: how come vdpau and vaapi (without "-copy") worked in smplayer in Leap 15.0?
No idea, but my wild guess is that it used an older logic that didn't rely on the firmware much. Or simply vdpau/vappi never worked in the bast but just looked as if it worked :) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
