So DM would have to override sax settings -- it is an awkward solution, to set scroll in yast to "on", and then have utility to interpret it as off. Besides, technically it cannot be done I guess (because you wouldn't get movement, just scroll). Another problem (from you explanation) would be that yast left user in the middle, partially it provides some settings, but for read only (strangely enough it is read-only for first "mouse", and for the second mouse it is read/write). I hope such wish is justified. So... current situation is like this -- 3 tools, 4 places to change configuration. This is not good. The first tool user can use it sax of course -- what he/she see? Options (checkboxes) which are set on/off but he/she cannot change them. Honestly, I don't understand it -- if you don't intend to provide any way to change checkbox state then don't show it. It looks more like a broken app, than design decision to just show mouse info. Again, this is not good. And last thing -- user sees sax with disabled options, user sees KDE KControl without any option to control this, user don't see ksynaptics because it is not installed. So for the third time -- this is bad. User is left alone with a bit messy parts, and it is up to user to put all pieces together. I ended "simply" editing xorg.conf by hand, but I doubt that any regular user would dare to do this. Simply put: configuring mouse is not user friendly, suse lacks nice tool to do it. If this is necessary please integrate ksynaptics as another yast module, but please don't left user on his/her own. Touchpad is configured by sax, yes, it technically works by default, but I doubt that anyone work with such configuration -- scrolling everywhere makes you dizzy :-) It is not only my opinion, user is simply out of control. The best thing is to come up with good design, relying on bad design could only lead to another bad design -- and this just an example of such case. User should have one configuration tool for mouse/touchpad -- currently she/he has to use __3__ different tools to configure mouse (for example one for setting scroll, one for setting area for scrolling, and third for setting the speed of mouse movement). I think it should all be configured in yast -- if this forces change in X configuration/implementation and DM integration (maybe even better), at least it is well designed. So the notion should be rather to somehow make X accept changes on the fly, not to drop good idea because X has to be restarted. All in all, I don't think closing this report as WONTFIX is good, at least LATER would be more appropriate. I don't like comparisons, but do Windows and Mac users have to use 3 programs to set up their touchpads? I doubt it. Btw. I am not complaining, or anything like that, I use suse for a long time and I see how it is getting better and better (I like what 10.3 has to offer), but it is just really surprising how limited opensuse is here.
