[Bug 825018] New: Watching videos on openSUSE
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=825018 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=825018#c0 Summary: Watching videos on openSUSE Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 13.1 Milestone 0 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.3 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@suse.com ReportedBy: james.knott@rogers.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:21.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/21.0 I occasionally watch videos using openSUSE. However, there are a couple of shortcomings. One, while watching the video, the screen blanker still kicks it, if I don't touch the mouse or keyboard periodically. Also, when connecting to a TV or monitor via HDMI, the sound does not automatically switch, requiring using PulseAudio to switch audio output. This contrast with Windows where the screen does not blank when video is playing and the audio automatically switches to HDMI. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.As described in details. 2. 3. Actual Results: As described in details. Expected Results: As described in details. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Depending on source, I watch in Firefox or Seamonkey browser or with Kaffeine.
So, it needs a fix in each application. I guess the dedicated media player application has an option to disable the screensaver, so kaffeine should have such an option in preference dialog, etc. But the behavior on the web browser is a different question. It's just a flash plugin, and it doesn't mean you're watching a movie. That is, you cannot stop the screensaver just because a flash plugin is running. It might be a simple ad screen. For HTML5, the browser could determine much better about the content, so it might have a better option, though. In anyway, please report the problem to each upstream. It's a way too wide topic to track in the bugzilla.
As for HDMI, I would be doing this with my notebook computer, which has only one HDMI output. How does Windows do it? How does this compare with plugging in a USB headset? It switches audio automatically.
Yes, and this is a fundamental problem. In the case of HDMI, you are still seeing a video on both. The graphics screen won't be switched exclusively but usually cloned as default. Then only the sound is exclusively switched? It'd be inconsistent. In other words, there is no 100% analogy with the USB-audio case wrt HDMI audio/video. So, again, this is not a thing we can fix in the distro level. This is a fundamental feature to be enhanced in the upstream. It'd be better to join the discussion in PA devel ML or such. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
