Comment #0 is full terminal log, minus some irrelevant command output marked with "...", and minus typing errors. It's the whole session beginning after zypper dup completed. /etc/zypp/locks includes kernel-de* and kernel-lo*, as is standard procedure here. The comment #0 sequence of events was planned based upon the several failures on other TW hosts (and possibly also on Slowroll hosts). (In reply to Martin Wilck from comment #2)
I can't reproduce this. initrds were created just fine here. I notice that your kernel version is older than current TW, and that the previously installed kernel was pretty old (6.1.12). Is this slowroll?
Not Slowroll. 6.1.12 was removed to free space prior to 6.8.9 installation. Comment #0 shows newest initrd prior to that for 6.8.9 is for 6.7.9.
Anyway, please provide the zypper.log file (the part that corresponds to the transaction shown in the journal).
zypper.log was already rolled, so the entirety of zypper.log-20240807.xz is attached. Prior is zypper.log-20240806.xz last date contained is 14 June, as is its file timestamp. Later same day I upgraded to 20240806 32bit on host gx270 using the same sequence of events as shown in comment #0, and initrd was generated in normal fashion expected. As I wrote in comment #0: "It only occurs on a random basis." I still have more TW installations that need upgrades and newer kernels, so will be trying more reproductions using same scenario. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I wrote <https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/list/support@lists.opensuse.org/thread/ADAQV5ZMQ7DVKSF2QQJV3Y3MESTE5CUS/> on May 14 about TW 20240512 on 64 bit Pentium 4 HT host g5eas, going from 6.6.28 to 6.6.30 longterm. I there indicated likelihood of 6th observed occurrence. If I'm adding up right, it appears likely I've observed the errant behavior 14 or more times. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

All TWs and Slowrolls here have had this for quite some time: # cat /etc/environment INITRD_IN_POSTTRANS=1 SKIP_REGENERATE_INITRD_ALL=1 All will be getting the following added: WM2_DEBUG=1 WM2_VERBOSE=1 It's possible each of the earlier failures not remembered could have been on Core2Duo or older processors. if you install both a new kernel and some other package that wants to rebuild the initrd at the same time, no initrd will be built at all.
Makes sense, except, I'm doing single transaction in each instance: rpm. All installations here have this configuration: # zypper ll | grep kern 25 | kernel-de* | package | (any) | 26 | kernel-lo* | package | (any) | #
So finally some clue ...
Yay!!!!! Seems right this issue would have started roughly the same time as SKIP_REGENERATE_INITRD_ALL was introduced on account of bug 1192014 last spring. Given how hard this is to reproduce, I'd expect it to take more than a month for that new regenerate-initrd-posttrans to suggest this is fixed, trying to prove something won't or can't happen, and assuming another suse-module-tools-scriptlets update doesn't replace it before enough time passes. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm not seeing any trace messages from regenerate-initrd-posttrans. Are you sure you have installed the file provided in the correct path (/usr/lib/module-init-tools/regenerate-initrd-posttrans)?
No doubt, but it was unclear whether it mattered that the installation was equipped with either of suse-module-tools-scriptlets 16.0.50-1.1 suse-module-tools-scriptlets 16.0.51-1.1 First try on test #1, dracut-posttrans was not found, so I backed up some and upgraded to the latter, then reinstalled your test version of regenerate-initrd-posttrans, without remembering to reinstate your modification to /usr/lib/module-init-tools/kernel-scriptlets/rpm-script. So perhaps the tests will need to be tried on an as yet untested installation? To me it's uncanny how hard subject failure had been to reproduce, while now it's happened more than twice in succession. For the benefit of bug 1225296, I needed to swap NVidia GPUs between big41 and p5bse, so I needed to first install 6.6.50, again as on big41, on Slowroll, not on TW: # inxi -CS System: Host: p5bse Kernel: 6.6.32-2-longterm arch: x86_64 bits: 64 Console: pty pts/0 Distro: openSUSE Tumbleweed-Slowroll 20240901 CPU: Info: dual core model: Intel Core2 Duo E7500 bits: 64 type: MCP cache: L2: 3 MiB Speed (MHz): avg: 1596 min/max: 1596/2926 cores: 1: 1596 2: 1596 # The test version of regenerate-initrd-posttrans from comment 26 should fix this. I'd be grateful if you could confirm. The last findings in comment 30 look promising for sure.
To be clear, for upcoming kernel installations, the only deviation from a normal installation needed should be using your patched regenerate-initrd-posttrans script from comment #26 attachment (instead of that from suse-module-tools-scriptlets-16.0.51-1.1)? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
