AFAICT save_y2logs is only available while the installer is running so when it crashes rather than stopping with an error message you get no way of collecting logs.
No, it's always there. It's part of the yast2.rpm package. You might not have it in your $PATH, though, since it's in /usr/sbin. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

no, it isn't there anymore when the installer crashes as pointed out in bug 1000716 You have to boot with an extra argument to save the logs in this case. And the script running installer could run save_y2logs automagically when the installer exits (or crashes) so you get the logs in any case. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

As pointed out in another of your bug reports, it is there via a root shell on console 2 as long as that red "an error has occured" error popup is still open. Just don't close that popup before you are finished.
Except in this case there is no popup. The installer just crashes. So unless you plan on crashing the installer before you even boot it and append the argument to run a shell after installation you do not get any logs whatsoever. This is already said in the bug description and explained in great detail in comment 3.
And we can't automatically save the logs somewhere because all we have available at that time is the RAM disk the installer is running from.
The ramdisk is fine. After the installer crashes you can copy them elsewhere. If the installation finishes and you reboot they just get trashed but you don't need them in that case. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
