[Bug 669798] New: Kernel 2.6.38-rc3 regresses to black screen on boot
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=669798 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=669798#c0 Summary: Kernel 2.6.38-rc3 regresses to black screen on boot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Sean.D.McNally@GMail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 SUSE/3.6.13-3.1 Firefox/3.6.13 Kernels 2.6.38-rc1 and -rc2 from the /HEAD repositories correctly booted on an Intel i5 Arrandale with Ironlake graphics (Intel GMA HD), resolving the "black screen" on boot. Problem originally reported on Dell e6510 (bug # 29728). Kernel 2.6.38-rc3 reverts to pre-2.6.38 behavior, reverting to the "black screen" after inteldrmfb. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot kernel 2.6.38-rc3-3.1 on a Intel i3 or i5 with integrated graphics 2. 3. Actual Results: Results in the previously (2.6.34, .36 and .37 kernel) experienced "black screen" Expected Results: Expected (at least) the behavior exhibited by kernels 2.6.38-rc1 and -rc2. Although the graphics transition flickered for a moment, the display continued to operate in correct form (full geometry, and not black). Problem appears to be a regression. See bug #29278 for history. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Confirm this bug report for 11.3 and 11.4. On 11.3, kernel 2.6.38-rc3.3.1 from kernel/HEAD/openSUSE_11.3, date 04-Feb-2011 @ 1141. On 11.4, kernel 2.6.38-rc3.3.1 from kernel/HEAD/opeSUSE_Factory, date 05-Feb-2011 @ 0145. In each case, re-boot with kernel 2.6.38-rc2-2.2 restored proper boot (absence of "black screen"). Behavior of 2.6.38-rc3 kernels mimics 2.6.37 and prior kernels. PC is Gateway NV79 i5-430, 4GB, Intel GMA HD. Graphics is commonly referred to as "Ironlake: with Arrandale processor. Earlier bugs reported against Dell e6510, however problem is more expansive (ref bug 29278). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks for testing.
Can you reproduce it with kernel-vanilla?
Sorry for the delays .... On 11.4: kernel 2.6.38-rc3.3.1 vanilla exhibits the same behavior ("black screen") as kernel desktop from kernel/HEAD. Please note: in every case, lid closure/reopening immediately following "black" screen will restore the dispaly in proper form, and boot continues. Continuance to the DE login screen without the lid closure/reopening requires a workspace switch: ctrl+alt+F2 close lid reopen lid ctrl+alt+F1 ctrl+alt+f7 (<--- not always required) Further, with each -rc3 kernel, power management enters a behavior loop during "suspend": suspend recover (as above) prompt for permission suspend Only method of recovery is re-boot. I will test on 11.3 shortly and post back. Note: The -rc3 kernel is definitely faster (over -rc2) during boot and in subsequent activity. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Updating status: same regressed "black screen" continues to present in kernels through 2.6.38-27 (inclusive, with exception of 2.6.38-rc6-16).
Kernel 2.6.38-rc2 continues to boo-16t cleanly (without the "black screen).
With exception of kernel 2.6.38-rc6-16, each "black screen" at boot is recoverable by lid closure/reopening.
Install of kernel 2.6.39-27 (the "release" kernel?) exhibits the same "black screen" behavior. As this behavior has been presented in every kernel since 2.6.38-rc2, I am posting to this bug. In bug 29278 (freedesktop), allusion was made to possible incorporation in kernel 2.6.39. Apparently, the various commits did not make this cut, as the problem persists. The problem is not just the recoverable "black screen" during boot, but more significantly, the severe compromise of power management, as suspend, hibernation, lid closure and display brightness/power manifested. I have amended the bug title text to reflect the current kernel. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Problem is NOT resolved up through kernel 3.0.0rc5. FWIW, as stated in original bug report, problem had been previously resolved in kernels 2.6.38-rc1 and -rc2.
Further update: Problem persists through Kernel 3.0.0-7, presents in kernel versions: desktop, default and vanilla, all x86-64. Observation: entry of "vga=ask" in GRUB presents only the VESA modes (i.e.: x0317 = 1024x768/16 bit). The two kernels that CORRECTLY booted (2.6.38-rc1/rc2) presented the entire range of available video modes. However, ..., when the failing kernels were tested on an Ubuntu GRUB2, the problem manifests exactly the same. The only resolutions found to work: 1. Closure/re-opening of the lid. (Depending on Power Management settings, the timing of this action is problematical). 2. ctrl+alt+F2, close/reopen, ctrl+alt+f1. Unfortunately, this sequence is not a 100% circumvention. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Addition of "acpi_backlight=vendor" to the kernel boot options provides rectification of the "black screen" at boot-time, as well as "black screen" experienced during power-management actions, such as "suspend" and "hibernate", as well as screen dimming. Addition of "acpi_backlight=vendor" modifies /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 to /sys/class/backlight/acer-wmi, providing kernel interface to the acer-wmi BIOS support. Tested on 11.4, kernels 2.6.37.6 and 3.1.0-rc9-7, both Gnome (2.32) and KDE (4.7.2). Tested on 12.1MS5++ (basically 12.1 updated to factory), kernels 3.0.0-4 and 3.1.0-rc9-7, with Gnome 3 and KDE (4.7.2). (Gnome 3 incorrectly sets brightness low at resume, but this is a Gnome 3 problem, not a kernel issue). Testing hardware: Gateway NV79, Intel i5-430M (aka "Arrandale"), with Intel GMA HD (aka "Ironlake") graphics, 4GB. Testing only in 64-bit (x86-64) real mode. No VM involvement used in any testing. Further, keyboard-managed screen brightness (fn+up/down arrows) functioned correctly, and brightness levels maintained across logoff/login, as well as across suspend/resume and hibernate/resume. COMMENT: This issue is based on the "backlight" management, partially attained at kernel 2.6.38-rc1/2, and regressed. Bug title amended to reflect continuance to present release and factory kernels. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
