[Bug 747233] New: Libre offic crashes when trying to insert a picture from scanner
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=747233 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=747233#c0 Summary: Libre offic crashes when trying to insert a picture from scanner Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: OpenOffice.org AssignedTo: bnc-team-ooo@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: suse@mh11.de QAContact: cwei@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:9.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/9.0.1 When trying to select "insert -> picture -> from scanner" the libre office crashes. This happens with my brother DCP-195C multi function device, but as you could read in the net also with other scanners. xsane and other tools work fine. On my SuSE 12.1 (w/o a "real" scanner) at least the select scanner dialog opens. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. start libre office 2. go to "insert -> picture -> from scanner -> select device" 3. see libre office crashing :-( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have some troubles creating a backtrace log, I do not know, what the problem is... I installed all the libreoffice*-debuginfo packages using YAST in the correct version 3.4.2.6-2.3.1 When I try to start the gdb debugger, I get: Reading symbols from /usr/lib64/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin...Missing separate debuginfo for /usr/lib64/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin Any ideas? Explanation: you wrote "when the device selection dialog brings the crash". It is not the selection dialog, who brings the crash, instead, the dialog does not open at all, but libre office crashed before the dialog is shown! 2. When connecting the scanner to a (64bit) 12.1 Linux (first having the driver installed, of course;-)), I have the same problem as with SuSE 11.4. I think, this means, we have the first verdict: "it seems to be the driver" When having not connected the device on 11.4, the "selection dialog opens also! But anyway: as well on the 11.4 as the 12.1 system, xsane works fine! Additional info: for the 12.1 system, xsane works only as root (see also https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=732890 - have not check, whether the IDs are equal!) For the 11.4 system, xsane runs w/o problems as user and root. 3. did not try that because on both systems the LO crashes and I think, it really could be a prob of the driver instead of the SuSE / LO itself. I would first like to send you a backtrace log, if you give me some hints about my problem described above. Ah...perhaps this is the log problem in 12.1: when the crash happens, please give a command "backtrace" to get a trace log and "thread apply all bt" for threads log :) The wiki page shows everything you need to get a rich information back strace: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Bugreport_LO#How_to_get_backtrace -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Then, I tried to check all the libreoffice*-debugpackages from the repos openSUSE-11.4-Update-Debug and openSUSE-11.4-Debug -> unfortunatley the count differs and also the package names differ. -> while the "update-package" contains the 3.4.2.6-2.3.1, the "distrib-debug" contains the 3.3.1.2-1.2.3 packages. => will now change to the 12.1 system again and try to get a good backtrace (it was my fault yesterday, forgotten the "backtace" and "thread apply all bt" commands. sorry for that) Anyway, I am very interessted also in getting a good trace on the 11.4 machine, any further hints? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As I wrote in my original description xsane and other tools work fine, this means, they do not call sane_brother3_get_devices or they call in in another context or with different parameters (or, or, or,...). On the other side, as I also wrote, it seems that this happens with different scanners (not self tested, only read in the net) and this should mean that also other drivers have problems when LO calls the "...get_device" function. These all are the reasons, why I reported this problem here (under Component: LO) and for another component. So, if there are more ideas how to solve that problems, I would be glad. But in this particular case it could mean that the bug is in a library for which we do not have the source code so that we can neither reproduce it (we do not have a scanner that uses a non-SANE driver) nor can we fix it. If LibreOffice does not crash when trying to insert a picture from scanners using other drivers (not Brother's brscan3) then it indicates that in this particular case the root cause is likely not in LibreOffice but in Brother's libsane-brother3.so. I assume if LibreOffice would crash in any case when trying to insert a picture from any scanner, we should have got more such bug reports. Michael Haussmann, in comment #0 you wrote that "this happens with my brother DCP-195C multi function device, but as you could read in the net also with other scanners". Please provide info for which exact other scanner models it also happens so that I can check which scanner drivers are used. Perhaps all those other scanners need drivers from Brother? When I switched to openSuSE 11.4 and 12.1, the problem occurs" That comment helped a lot! Because I have an openSUSE 11.4 system and - voila ! - I can reproduce it there with my Canon CanoScan N1240U/LiDE30 (using the SANE driver "plustek"): xsane works and also from Gimp I can import from my scanner (via menue -> "File" -> "Create" -> both via "XSane: Device dialog..." and "XSane: plustek...") but in LibreOffice via menue -> "Insert" -> "Picture" -> "Scan" -> "Select Source..." LibreOffice crashes. Therefore it could be either an issue in the SANE software - in openSUSE 11.3 we had sane-backends 1.0.21 - in openSUSE 11.4 and 12.1 we have sane-backends 1.0.22 or an issue in the office software: On my openSUSE 11.4 64-bit x86_64 system I manually downgraded (via plain "rpm") sane-backends to sane-backends 1.0.21 from http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.3/repo/oss/suse/x86_64/ and LibreOffice still crashes. Therefore - from my current point of view - the issue is in LibreOffice in particular because only LibreOffice crashes while other applications which use scanners (like xsane and gimp) work. I think now the LibreOffice experts should have a closer look (I am not at all a LibreOffice expert): Yi Fan Jiang, in comment #1 you wrote "I could not see the problem in my environment". Could you please describe your environment in more detail. E.g. does it perhaps work in a 32-bit i586 environment?
